The female threads inside my targa is completely stripped on the front drivers side and it wont bolt in. I have a spare targa that fits on perfectly but it's a different color. Is it possible to swap the hardware from inside my spare targa the original?

short answer.. no
if you want to cut the inner panel and weld it back in place, bodywork, paint...yes

you could do what i did.. but it is risky and might hurt your paint...but it is junk anyway soit is worth a try

i stripped the headliner, seals and anything flamable off of the top. then welded the threads shut, drilled and tapped new ones. but if i had it to do over again id try braizing them with a soft brass rod, as it was a pita to drill the weld back out.

wont last long, that was my first thought as well, but the hole/nut isnt captured very tightly and has no bottom so it is hard to get a helicoil to stay put. i even tried epoxy it just would not stay put very long.

Helicoil works fine (mine is done, not by me) but you MUST remove the tang on the coil once it's in or it will dent the top.

Time-sert would be better.

Also, the driver's side strips because the top is tightened in the wrong sequence. Tighten the back 2, then the driver's side front, then the passenger side front. Tighten the passenger side front first and you'll strip the driver's side...

^ didnt know this! any reason to this?

my driver side has been getting loose after a few weeks of driving. Guess what gets tightened down first...

You can trim the helicoil so its not so long before inserting it to if that helps. If mine strips completly ill be time-certing it (or what ever the term is)

I've had good succes with a helicoil repair also. Since it's not a high heat location, i also added thread-forming epoxy (with release agent on a "dummy" bolt) as I installed the helicoil. It's held fine for 8 years. I've become more torque sensitive when installing the panel.:biglaugh:

Targa lids have a twist too them...this twist helps them seal and too keep constant pressure as too help stop bolts from backing out....that's why they have the sticker near the visor telling you a sequence as it "does" matter.

I'll try the coil idea as a last resort, thanks. I know it's not possible to swap the targa inner panel hardware from one top to another...but is it possible to swap just the targa top "body panel" from one top to another?
