Starter Problem (Not a normal starter problem)

I have searched but I can't find a solution to my starter problem. On occassion, when I start my car, the starter doesn't disengage when I start the car. When that happens, I can turn the key to off, and then take the key out, and the starter still goes. I just replaced the ignition switch (just the electrical connector part) and it still does that. Anyone have any ideas??? Please help!!!

sounds like the sliding/pivoting mechanical joints in the starter could be sticking. As long as the starter drive pinion gear is sticking out, the power should flow through the starter, so if there is something holding the gear from sliding back in when you de-energize the plunger it will just keep cranking.

I would start by removing the starter trigger wire from the starter ( little blue 1 wire connector) and putting a test light or volt meter to it and make sure that when you let go of the key from cranking, the voltage is no longer there. If this holds true then you know the electrical part of the circuit before the starter is good. If the voltage stays going with the key not in the start position, you have electrical issues.

If that tests out good, i would remove the starter and inspect it/repair or replace it.

It's more than likely the starter solenoid, which is attached to the starter. If it were me, I would buy a new starter.

This problem doesn't happen often, just once in a while. Does that not matter, could it still be the solenoid?

Yes, could be getting weak and will probably get worse, if that's what it is. Cyfi6 gave some info on how to check it.

I had a starter get stuck like that once. It kept going until the starter seized up and started smoking. I was not fortunate enough to have it be an intermittent problem. Check your circuit like CyFi6 said and plan on getting a starter. Good luck

you might need a new ecu, or on your harness you cld have a short or severed wire. normaly the ecu should shout off the relay once the motor starts up
