Well the 7MGTE starter doesn't work (much too big and its not a direct drive starter).

I've been to all the auto parts stores in town and looked through their starters. No luck.

Anyone know where to find a new starter for the 1JZ R154?

the 7M DOES! work. I've got that on mine RIGHT now, and it works great. Several other guys on SF also have the 7M starter on their 1JZ MA70 Supra

For what I've heard at Supraforums, 89+ 7M starter should fit. Others have suggested 2JZGTE, 2JZGE, Lexus GS and SC (not sure about the yrs) HTH.

Sorry, but the thing doesn't fit. Its about 2 inches longer than the 1JZ one.

I need a direct stock replacement 1JZ R154 starter. Anyone??

I fabricated my own engine mount adapters to fit my 86.5 subframe. Mine are quite beefy and the extra length of the 7M starter does not fit. I tried for half an hour from various angles until my arm was too tired to hold the damn thing any longer :icon_conf

whats wrong with your starter ?? dose it click alot before it kicks in ??

Yeah I usually have to turn the key 20-30 times to get the thing to start. Finally, on Saturday I tried for 5 minutes with no luck at all. It does click every time and its getting plenty of juice (tested with a multimeter).

Either the contacts are dead or there is some internal wiring that is failing.

Nevermind, I found a source for a JDM 1JZ starter.

$208 from Champion/Jay Marks Toyota. $30 core refund brings it to $178. Kinda expensive, but I really have no choice. At least its brand-new OEM and not a crappy reman :icon_bigg

Ah! okay, now that makes sense. I'm sorry that i was stubbern in pushing that the 7M starter will fit. I have that on my car with Orin's engine mounts with a 89+ crossmember. I've know several other guys with this setup as well.

You have a different situation, therefore, your clearence issues are not the same as what others have.

Thanks for sharing that info with us. :D

Hope you get 'er running.

Thanks Bryan. You weren't being overly pushy or anything. I should have specified why it didn't fit in the first place. The holes for the bolts and the teeth on the gear are the same and it looks like it should work, but try as I might I can't get the thing lined up due to interference.

The 7m starter is about 2 inches longer and much heavier than the 1JZ starter. I suppose I could have taken off the engine mount on the driver's side, but who wants to do that to install a starter?? :)

NOT ME! It's not fun replacing our starters in the first place! Let alone i can't imagine actually having to jack the engine up.

Good luck,

Bryan
