Standalone or Another ECU?

Well my car has not been running for some time now so I sent my ecu down to Driftmotion. Some of the capacitors were starting to leak and one of them had twice the marked value so he replaced all the capacitors. Today he went to try the ecu in a friends car that is running and well it is not good. At first the car seemed like it was going to start but then it just would not start at all. Same exact problem I am having.

So my question is should I get another 5 speed ecu or should I just get a standalone? My power goals are big single in the near future so keep that in mind. Also what standalone is recommended? I am not looking to spend a lot of money but I realize a standalone is not cheap either.

Right now I have been looking at the Stinger and maybe the AEM but would like other suggestions as well.

Also keep in mind my car is pretty stock right now besides some BPU and is a JZA70 with a 1JZ.

Thanks,

Steve

Big single, standalone and drift motion? go stinger imo. Its a good price for standalone and Aaron knows how to get it done right.

its alway good to go standalone with a BIG SINGLE (1BIG1) if u have the money but if u dont u can go another ecu and piggy-back like me...
Currently my Supra is controlled by the stock ECU with the HKS VPC and Apex'i AFC. I find this setup to be tested and reliable, but not spectacular in performance. Since my goal is a fast and reliable street car, I may keep this setup for a while until an aftermarket stand alone system is proven to be better in performance and reliability or another word when i have the money

I guess my next big question is if I get the Stinger what else would I need to get it fully operational? For instance if I purchase the stinger and harness is it recommended that I also get the Bosch o2 sensor for wideband capabilities? Is there a map that I can follow that will give me a general idea of where to start with my BPU setup? Sorry for all the questions I am just trying to get an idea what all is involved with going standalone.

To my knowledge, which isn't great, really all you need is the harness, the standalone its self, and the O2 for wide band. Everything else comes after its installed. Wiring it up, and then tuning would be the hardest part I think.

I my self plan to run with the Stinger from Driftmotion, But i already have a wide band that ill use with it. I also have all the parts lying on my floor in my bed room for the BPU. 272 Crower Cams w/ springs & retainers, Sard 550cc injectors, AFPR, Walbro 255, AL Flywheel, stage 3 clutch, ARP studs all around. To me this is a great start for a good build up. Then all i have to do is bolt on a big turbo down the road and ill be running well over 550whp.

What parts to choose will be based on what you ultimately want to use the car for, and what power goals you are going for.

Well I think I am going to purchase the stinger, pnp harness and the wideband. How hard is it to setup and get an initial tune in? Also are there any stock maps available?

i think aaron provides maps so you can get it to a place to tune. if they know how to tune im sure they can use the software.

IF you want to grow with your car I recommend you look into a APEX-i Power FC.

It is a stand alone ECU but also work like a stock ecu. Just plug it in and go drive your car like you still have the stock in there. No tuning require until you want some serious HP.
