It's starting to get a little annoying. I stop some where after I get off the gas and it goes rich and stalls. Not even going fast. Now my car is throwing code 31 and idles irratically. Vacuum was checked, connection was checked. How is it exactly that you check if the afm is good. Also if anyone has any further input on it I would appreciate it. Thanks, josh

trade your BOV for a bypass valve

...or you could read his post and find out that he has a code 31, which of course means the following:

31 Air Flow Meter Signal
Diagnosis
(7M-GE) Open circuit in VC signal or short circuit between VS and E2 when idle contacts are closed.
(7M-GTE) Open or short circuit in air flow meter signal.
Trouble Area
Air flow meter circuit
Air flow meter
ECU

bench test your AFM, if it doesn't check out then replace the electronics. that's probably why your car is stalling.

ps- josh, where in NY are you from?

I would have thought the BOV would cause that code also if it was vented into the atmosphere. It has a similar effect as what he is describing, but not the same.

Code 31 is purely an electrical problem with the AFM like Shaeff said...the wiring or the AFM electronics are bad.

Josh - did you happen to clean the inside of the AFM with spray carb cleaner or something like it?

No, I never cleaned it with anything. I was just about to pull in my driveway from a 1/2 hour ride and it started bucking. I didnt beat on it. In fact I never beat on my car just because I want to be able to drive it for atleast 2 months straight without a problem. I had a similar problem but it was a broken bvsv. I'll test it out and see what I get. Thanks, josh

Shaeff : I'm from Middletown, NY not too far from you. We'll have to meet up sometime. Possibly at a meet but but you'll have to let me know because I have a hard time finding out where they are.

when i had this problem it turns out that my car was not properly grounded. Later i found out i had a massive exhaust leak from my exaust mani, and my intercooler tubes were loose

josh- here's how to test the AFM: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?Section=FI&Page=96

nowhere in his post do i see anything about an aftermarket BOV... don't assume someone has something. ;)

i'm willing to bet that's your problem, especially since that's the only code you said you have. use the link i provided above to bench test the AFM, and get back to us. :)

also- i'm not sure if i'll make it to anymore meets this year, josh. it all depends on how fast i get parts. my car is undergoing a full body restoration this winter, so hopefully i'll come around full swing in the springtime!

Yep 31's AFM, I had same code about a year ago. I just bought a used afm with electronics (you could most likely just by electronics if short on funds, but i bought both together) and popped in, no problems since. Gas mileage also got better :icon_bigg

i did it once :D .. but with a specific CRC electronic cleaner .. for plugs and shiat ... and my AFM died on me right away after starting ... ... sadly I had to get a replacement from junkyard for $50 and worked flawlessly ever since ... DONT CLEAN YOUR AFM WITH ANYTHING BUT DRY PAPER TOWEL :D or just dip towel in the cleaner and wipe whatever bothers you on afm pillar

^^^ Yep! That will do it!

Sometimes you can save the electronics (BTW it's the optical sensor that takes the hit) by using compressed air to blow it out really well...just be careful around the wire. Most of the time though, the electronics are toast.
