i have the new version of the ssq, and it looks great...but...only sounds...well soso it is loud but it is just a plain jane air moving through an enclosure sound, like a run of the mill boring ol' bov...example...the turbo xs(sorry ro any fans of it, but opinions are just that...opinions) i want that signature ssqbov sound i have all stock components on it, but i did remove the triangular fin in the center because it kinda just made a really super wimpy lip whistling sound(lol) i am currently running only 10psi until i upgrade my fuel system, but i do have a bit of turbo-oil blow by(currently being fixed) could that be the problem?

if you bought your HKS BOV new it should have come with the purple insert which gives it the high pitched sound. Only way to get that sound is to buy the purple insert if you dont have one

the reason it sounds plain is because you took out the insert. it now IS just a rush of air, you're right. the only reason the ssqv sounds way different than "run of the mill" blow off valves is because of those fins. if you didn't want a high pitched "lip whistle" sound, you shouldn't have gotten a ssqv lol.

the sound you're looking for is compressor surge apparently. sure it sounds really sick, but if you start surging at high boost levels you're basically fisting yourself and your compressor wheel. no BOV should flutter like that. i think someone told me the gold or the silver inserts sound like an "aggressive rush of air rather than the annoying, high pitched sound"... whatever that means.

oh ok, thanks, no i love the ssq sound, i guess that is compressor surge:nono:, and i'm not cool with that whole fisting thing lol.... kinda sucks though, why would an aftermarket bov do that? I figured thats why people pay out the ass for them to avoid compressor surge.....o well i did some youtubing last night and found the purple insert sound it sounds great so thats what i'm gonna do, thanks for all the help guys

HKS racing type II has a "flutter" sound to it. Not unlike compressor surge.

gold insert is even higher pitched then the stock silver insert. purple is a lower pitch than the silver insert. No insert is a rush of air. I like the sound of my synapse synchronic BOV, hard to describe, a little high pitched with a lot of air wooshing to it. like, "chiiii-whooosh"

The Juggernaut has my old
..... Ive always thought it was the way the ssqv was designed and the purple fin that caused the fluttering sound at low boost...

plus if it was surge wouldnt you hear it more through the intake filter than the blow off valve...

id be interested in hearing somebody running the hks ssqv with purple insert and that has a anti surge turbo to see if it still does it at low boost levels and sitting still..

I love the loud whistle from the ssqv....gets peoples attention..

That guy may have a little compressor surge :dunno: mine sounds a little different.

With a CT26 57 trim, 2.5" hardpipes and a spearco style IC, I get a tiny bit of flutter at 10psi and pretty much none at 14psi (just a whoosh sound at that level).

I am not an expert, so I talked to a few very reputable people/shops. From their responses, it is clear that mine is functioning properly. There was some discussion about the spring inside making a bit of noise with low boost. Again, I am not an expert with BOV's, so I turned to people who really know their stuff. They did not seem alarmed at all - they certainly indicated it was doing a much better job than stock at all boost levels - which was the goal.

Also from talking to these experts, I will be switching to a Tial BOV as soon as I switch to speed/density. Pretty much everybody mentioned it as one of the best. One guy also mentioned the synchronic.

Tial is a little on the slow side for some people who are running lower boost, it may be better to use the 9 lb spring with it instead of the recommended 11 lb spring. Ever search streetfire.net for synapse comparisons? It shows how slow a Tial really is a lower boost level as far as actuation goes. You can hear the turbo surging right before the Tial finally decides to open up. You may want to keep that in mind before making your choice on the BOV you want ;).

Another wierd quirk is this: My cousin's upper Cooleeze hardpipe with a genuine HKS SSQV has been ran on both of our Supras. It would "flutter", like a "chicha, chicha, chooo" on his car, whereas on mine there was no flutter whatsoever. I am assuming this is due to some rotten/broken vacuum lines on his car that he had at the time (motor is torn down as of right now). So any of you who are experiencing a "flutter" issue with your aftermarket BOV's, you may want to go through EVERY vacuum line. Please refer to the TSRM for a diagram of all vacuum lines for reference when replacing all the hoses.
