Hey guys,

I've noticed that sometimes when i add 1/2-1 quart of oil with the engine cold and then start it up, it runs fine. a little while after (15 mins driving it, 30 mins cooldown) i'll go to start it up again and the idle hovers around 400-500 and is extremely rough. I can give it gas and hold it around 1500-2000 for a few seconds and the idle smooths back out to 800-900.

what's the problem? i searched for adding oil starting problems but couldn't find much at all.

Leaking valve cover gaskets causing a vaccum leak at idle.

Oil helps seal the leak when added, or when you rev the motor and "fill" the head with oil.

When the car is warm, the oil drains back to the pan quickly.

Replace your valve cover gaskets so your car stops leaking oil.

It's the only logical answer I see to it.

replaced the valve cover gaskets about 5000 miles ago, and i still find a trail of oil under the first bolt (top, far forward). i'm wondering if this is coming from the cps seal, because it drips down my exhaust heat shield.

my gf's mr2 does the same thing sometimes after she's added oil, i think thats about all i can add right now.
