Spiking Temp Gauge

This past December I had a MHG, all new hoses, removed EGR and the LEX/AFM done to my supra. Right before I had this work done the Temp gauge used to spike, (go up real fast and return to normal). Well apparently the temp sensor had been eroded and that was replaced when the MHG went on. Thought that solved my probelms....

Everything had been running fine until my 2 hr drive to the Englishtown meet this past weekend. 3/4 of the way into the trip I look down and notice my temp gauge above normal. I kept driving keeping a close watch on it. The needle eventually went horizontal and then went into the red for a quick second. When this happened I pulled over and shut her down. The radiator had pushed all the coolant into the overflow bottle and popped the cap off of it. I put the cap back on the bottle and a good portion of the coolant was sucked back into the radiator when I started it up. The temp was now at normal and I made it to E-Town. However, on the way home, about a half an hour into the trip it started doing the same thing. I needle mainly stayed between the normal downward position and being horizontal across. It kept fluctuating like this the whole way home. Seemed like when I would brake hard while driving the needle would go down a little. Didnt know if it was pushing the antifreeze back into the radiator. Anyway I made it home.

My mechanic seemed to think the rad. cap was bad and not holding enough pressure causing the overflow tank to fill up. I bought a new cap and put it on. However, this afternoon I had been driving for all of 10 minutes and I started to see the temp needle creep up again, and the overflow bottle seemed to be too full when I popped the hood? (When the car is cool, and I fill up the radiator, and the overflow bottle up to the line, what is a normal level for the overflow tank to be full when the car is hot?)

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be. Like I said the temp sensor was recently replaced, I bought a new rad cap, and just had a MHG put on. Could my radiator be going bad? Last time I poured coolant in it I saw some little dark brown piece floating at the top, thought maybe it was rust?

Anyway sorry for the long post, just didnt want to leave anything out.

quit possible, but before you rule it. do a coolant pressure and compresion test. might be a sticky thermastat.

i had the exact same problem. the lower bolt on my thermostat housing was broken, leaking air in, super heating the sensor, spiking the gauge, then returning to normal after the air had purged itself.

so, basically any air leak into your coolant system can cause this. look for pinholes, look for any place air can get in. where air can get in, coolant can leak out.

another example. on my N/A motor (RIP) i had a pinhole in that plug on the passenger side under the exhaust manifold. after a half hour of driving, it would spike the gauge, piss out coolant, then dry up. it took me almost a month to find out what was going on.

Can a coolant and pressure test be done at any regular auto shop? When I had a compression test done and found out I had a BHG, last time I did it at the dealer, but they are so damn expensive. Or would something like a coolant and pressure test cost about the same at most places?

by yourself a compression tester for 30 bucks at any auto parts store...while youre there buy a 10-15 dollar thermostat and oring...and call it a day... im pretty sure your thermo needs replacing...

Yea my car's doing the same thing too Gonna get a new thermostat this weekend. And I dont feel like doing anything major because i am in the process of building a new motor for the car.

Ok will do, I'll give those a try.

BTW, Ideal, if it is just the thermostat, is that normal for the overflow tank to fill 75% up in hot weather?

Thanks, I'm still learning and understand the basics but not the whole interworkings of the motor yet, but now that you explained it, makes perfect sense. I'll change the thermo and burp her, then take it from there.

Well, FACK!! My new MHG is officially leaking. Wish it could have been a number of other things. My mechanic said he is going to retorque the head down. I was just wondering, would thise even solve the problem or just delay it until it happens again since it wasn't sealed correctly originally. I eventually plan on getting a boost controller and want to run at least 12 psi.
