The speedometer is mechanically driven from the transmission. The cable could be broken, seized from being crushed, or disconnected where it threads to the back right of the tranny.

If that isn't the problem could be the cable connection behind the gauge cluster.

The two basic possibilities are the gauge itself and the cable. Usually the cable makes noise.

Does the odometer still turn over? The odometer is directly mechanically driven by the cable, the gauge itself has a clutch which works against a spring. If the clutch lets go, then the gauge just reads zero all the time. It's also possible that the needle is just stuck at the gauge face.

If the odometer turns over, then the problem is the gauge itself. If the odometer does not turn over, then the problem is with the cable.

Check out the lower half of the cable, that's the typical part that breaks and you can just replace that part and not the whole thing.

It's easy to get to, you just have to crawl under the car and look right at the tranny on the passenger side.

If it's the cable, it would be a good idea to lube your new one up with motor oil (on the inside of the cable of course) to prevent this from happening anytime soon again. The cable being out of lube is what usually causes the failure.

Well I'm experiencing the same problem of of my odometer only going to 09 and stopping?

I'll investigate the cable. ;) Thanks.

My speedo is acting up as well.

Most of the time it will read 0 but it'll periodically bounce between 0-30 MPH. My initial thought was that I just didn't screw in the speedo cable all the way in the tranny. I went under there and screwed it in as much as I could with a cloth for better grip. It worked and it was accurate for a few stop lights...but alas, it doesn't work now.

Yes they are interchangeble.

To all of those having erratic, bouncing speedos, they are most likely getting ready to take a dump on you. Lube them up now to forstall this.

That's the main killer of the speedo cable. They need to be re-lubed after 15 years of so of neglect. :3d_frown:

Graphite lube works well for speedo cables as well. You can get this in bike shops, and it's SOMETIMES less expensive. This also does good things for your power antennas, and does not collect dust and dirt like greases do.
