The speedo is driven by a two piece cable. That cable is driven by the output shaft of the trans. The most likely reason is a problem with the cable. It might be broke at some point inside its cover.

Look next to the exhaust pipe. There is a small section a foot long or so.. Remove it and check the end that plugs into the tranny. If it is freyed then replace it.. If it has a single pin on the tranny side then it is probably the long section that connects to the guage cluster..

I think that it is safe to say that part of your speedo cable is broken...It is three seperate pieces that run from the side of the transmission, behind the downpipe, then up and over the firewall to the speedo gauge...

Your speedo flux relay must be broken. They're like $10 from Toyota...

Haha, nah I'm just playin, I would start with the easiest to get to first. Check the drive gear (it's on the passenger side of the tranny, you should see the speedo cable going into the tranny...where it connects to it, that's the drive gear), if you can find a cheap one get it and replace your old one. If that doesn't fix it then change the cables, but the long cable is a PIA to switch...I did it 3 times when fixing my speedo...had a little mishap with my dremel and the long cable :naughty:

2 piece, 3 piece...whatever. The problem is the speedo cable :)

I have a auto-5spd swap and 3 piece speedo cable. Long piece, short 1' piece, then a small metal elbow piece, which screws onto the tranny

here's a question. Do the speedo cables have seals of any sort? When I fixed mine I swear a little seal type thing came out of the end, but my new one didn't have anything like that....hmmmmm
