Speedometer drive gear problem.

Hi, I have a recurring issue with the drive gear for my speedometer. I've got an automatic transmission and I'm now nearly on my third speedometer drive gear. The transmission seems to keep chewing them up. I've had a look on the forums here as well as the TSRM, but I haven't found anyone else with the same issue, at least not so quickly and the TSRM doesn't really say much about installation of the drive gear.

So far when I put them in, I had to tap them (not super hard) with a rubber mallet to get them to go in. I've only got one spare one left and once that goes I have to order one from Japan $$$. The speedometer died again today after about 3 months. I checked the cables last time and they seemed OK, I just wonder if any issue with the cable might be causing the problem. I'm also not ruling out having made a mistake with the install. Should the drive gear just slide in smoothly or does it need to be tapped with a rubber mallet a bit to get it to go in?

Any information on why this might be happening and how to prevent it happening again would be greatly appreciated.

I'm considering taking the part to Toyota and having them install it, so that if it fails again, I've got some come back in case it fails again.

You need to look in the hole where the speedo. sensor goes and check the gear inside the trans. Chances are it's chewed up, and damaging the gear you keep replacing.
