Speedo not working after gauge removal

Hey guys. I just recently bought some reverse glow gauges for my car. I took the cluster out, put the overlays on. But now my speedo sits well below zero, likes pegs out the bottom. I tried moving it but every time it just falls back down after a couple seconds. I hooked it all back up anyways but the speedo doesn't even move. Everything else works fine. I even drove the car with the panel off and I could see the speedo cable moving so I know its not the cable. I took a power drill and put it in the back of the speedo and spun it and it moves the needle. Is there something i'm missing or am I just not installing it right? Thanks!

Pull the gauges back out, chances are you broke the little plastic "needle" that goes into the speedo itself off. It may not look broken, but the thing is supposed to stick out some insane amount.

Repair kit is about $7 or something. EZ fix

Autozone, etc will sell a little kit in their HELP! section or w/e, to replace the inside of the cable, all you have to do us pull/whatever off the old plastic peice and you crimp a metal one on. You have to remove the cable to do it, but it's super easy.

Come to think of it, you may have to pull the "cup" off also, to be able to get to it, then when you go to put it back on, you will have to cut the sleeve.

Hope that helps. I'm sure you could figure it out

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll take a picture of the cable when I get a chance to have you see if it looks short. It looked fine to me. When I was putting the overlays on it took a bit of effort to get them over the needles. Is it possible I broke something in the gauge? The needle sits well below what it should rest at.

Ok so here is an update. I got the speedo to actually move while I drive. But its still not right, its about 20 mph slow, and it doesn't move smoothly, it will climb up to a constant speed but not move much beyond that unless I completely stop, then it will drop below zero, it will not stay at zero when not moving though, it drops well below it like almost to the ebrake light or whatever is down there. I'm gonna assume this means I broke something in the gauge while i was trying to get the overlays on. Sound right?

Did you check the plastic needle that goes into the instrument cluster? Kind of sounds like you broke it and part of it is still in the instrument cluster and you got them to meet somewhat when you messed with it the second time. As you speed up, the speedo cable would turn faster than the little piece in the instrument cluster and have the speedo needle show you going slower than you actually are...if that makes sense.

Just my $.02 based off what you've said so far

No I left the needle on, but it did take a lot of forcing it to get it on. The cut out was not big enough. I actually ended up cutting the hole bigger to get it to fit. Everything on the speedo cable is metal, so if there is supposed to be a plastic piece it did break off. But I don't understand how that would affect where the speedo gauge zero's out at. Its an 89 so there is no peg at zero to stop the needle it just keeps falling.

Ok so I got it all working. My cable was fine. Somehow when I was sliding the overlays over the gauge I moved the needle past its zero out point causing the needle to keep moving so I held the stop and twisted the needle back to zero and it all works perfectly.
