This is a bit of a read (so I can get it all across).

I am probably (most likely) buying a 1987 Supra tomorrow. Here's the Kijiji link:
http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1987-Toyota-Supra-Hatchback-W0QQAdIdZ234806930

Grey leather interior in it (back seats are shot, fronts are pretty nice.. overall, I give the interior a 7/10.

So... problem? Well.. it has a couple little rust spots and little body thingys I am not totally happy with and then couple that with the valve covers leaking, LSD diff leaking and you have a tiny bit of work to make it a happy girl. After that I will decide what I am going to do with the car. But.. that leaves me with a 1990 MKIII with a BHG still sitting waiting for me.

The 1990 is a nice car, but it needs the most work of the 3 and my wife only will allow me 2. I own a grey 88 MKIII that is my baby.. and that one gets the big coin.. the other one will be more of a backup.

So.. what should I do with the 90?
The 90 has the BHG (minimum.. maybe more issues.. but it runs and spools nicely) and body issues with the doors having bondo cracking around the door handles. Passenger side quarter is very good but the driver side is starting to bubble around the lip. The clear coat on the car is also peeling (it is red and had a repaint to half the car when hit on the back pass side.. shitty job). Its a nice looking car, and I have cleaned up some of the engine issues while deciding if I am going to pull the drivetrain and fix it. But thats all moot now.. as I will not be going further with the car at this point.

Do I sell the 90 or tear it apart? I could use the 90 nose/rear lights on the 88 as well as the spoiler and the front leather seats (the 90 power seats are a little better than the 88 imo). But I would hate to destroy a MKIII that is so near to being a good car just for parts when I can do it in other ways.

Sell.. or part out... bah.. I cant decide.

Your timing is kinda surreal really to me. Your in Calgary, as am I. You will have 3 MKIII's so DID I up until day before yesterday when I started saving all the good parts from them and chopping the unibodies up (they are both crashed, not by me) so that I can have a nice neat garage once again. But I do have and am the original owner of a 1990 MKIII with grey leather interior.

I swapped a 2jz setup into my car and have tons of extra 7m related parts.

We should meet before it snows and I'll likely be able to and happy to help you out with whatever you like man.

Good to know another local anyways.

PM me.

So what is your reason to buy the 3rd one when you can fix the 90 up and probably end up with a lot of extra cash

well.. the 90 isn't drivable unless I fix the BHG (not a big job...) but I think it may lead to more fixes once the engine runs (just by looking at the condition of the vacuum lines). The guy did some work on the interior just to really mess things up so I have to pull the interior and fix the cabling/wires. (dont put in a sub if you have no idea what your doing.. hehe)

The 87 is very nice bodywise and drivable.

My thought was that I could strip down my 88, drive the 87 and give myself a 2 year window to perfect the 88. I do have a 3/4 ton truck for tooling around in winter and could use it as a second DD as well.. but...

The 87 is definitely going to need work, however, I think the HG is done properly, the turbo only has about 6000 miles on the rebuild.. but there is sure to be some small stuff wrong with it that will need fixing as well. It has a little puff of blue when you start it cold but that seems to disappear so the valve seals are probably on their way out. Transmission feels strong but the clutch master cylinder (and probably the hose) is leaking. The LSD is very wet, and that one scares me a bit as I have never worked on a diff..

Going to go look at it again in an hour and will decide. I like the car and for 3k its not bad. The 88 is slotted for at least another 10k getting soaked into it, so that is already thought out. In the end, having 1 car is my goal (the 88) and I think I agree that the 90 rear spoiler/front bumper/rear light setup is the best look for the car and should be able to be done relatively easily.

On the other hand.. I could just stop on the 88, finish the body, paint it and sell it, and then finish the 90 properly. I like the seats but those are transferable as well.. lol.

Its a very tough choice.. because no matter what I do, it takes time and $$... I need to really have a good plan for the endgame or will end up wasting a lot of time and money. I just hate to see these cars die.

This car just popped up... Celica.. but very nice.. lol

Well.. I went and looked over it really closely.. and decided against it.

After thinking about the comments here, I decided that this is what I am going to do...

1. Buy a very clean stock already done (no rust, interior good) Supra (1990-92)
2. Fix the 90 I have and replace the bad body parts, get it running nice.. sell it (or sell it prior if I find the right buyer who has a plan to get past the BHG and body filled door panels)
3. Complete my 88 and then decide to keep or sell. (its fine as is, just needs the paint completed.. not going to sink the money in it that I planned).

Then I will start modding the 90 next summer starting with a very close "going over" of the body and suspension, adding decent rims, lowering it. After that I can plan the engine upgrades (still want a Supra that is somewhere between 350-450 HP)

I just dont have the time to do all the other "dreams" I had envisioned with the other cars. Building and tearing down and building up of 3-4 Supras is a young mans task.. I want to build one.. be happy.. and drive. (considering that I am a perfectionist.. so anytime I go to do the 1 hour job -like replacing my brake light seals... I end up tearing apart a quarter of the car, ordering new parts and 400.00 and 8 hours later... have one part of the car done properly... lol)

defintiely keep the 90, they're rarer than any pre 89..

and trust me, owning 3 supras is not what it's cracked up to be..

sure you have 3 supras, but in the end, YOU HAVE 3 SUPRAS, 3x the maintenance costs..!!!!

I may keep 2.. definitely not 3. But the 88 has so much money in it now.. unless I found someone who really had a good plan for it, Im better off keeping it. 2 is just.. like... cool.

Haha here is what I did, problem is you cant really see the fourth supra in the shop. The red two are mine and the one in the shop is my wifes and the blue one is a parts car/turbo motor donor. I highly recommend not doing this unless you have a lot of money and a lot of free time.
