last night i told my buddy to NOT drive the supra without putting some oil in it, due to thew fact that the front crank main seal is leaking, and of course he didnt listen and blew the motor..... a couple quick questions i have are:

will any 7m bottom end work for the replacement?

how hard is a manual swap?

and are there any tricks for the bottom end swap?

i might need a full swap, but it just sounds like a really bad rod knock.....

You'll need a GTE bottom end, the pistons and knock sensors are different, and the GTE also has oil squirters aimed at the bottom of the pistons to help keep them cool.

The manual swap isn't that difficult. You should pull the engine and tranny anyway, so you'll have everything out of the car except the driveshaft, and that's not hard to remove.

There is no easy way to replace the bottom end. Pull the engine and tranny, disassemble everything, bolt it all back on the new shortblock, reinstall.

1) The 7M non turbo internals are different. If you're looking for a whole new bottom end you should find a matching one (GTE/GE). The 7M blocks only differences are that the GE's do not have oil squirters whereas the GTE's do. Also, the later blocks (89+ I believe) are a bit thicker and beefier in the walls. You can find a thread on this (by IJ I believe) on this forum.

2) A manual swap would require: Manual transmission and bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, slave cyl, master cyl, clutch pressure hose (from master to slave), clutch pedal assy, brake pedal assy, driveshaft, interior pieces: shifter, shift boot, rubber pieces surrounding shifter, etc.

3) I think it's pretty straight forward, consult the TSRM. You're going to want to deck the block with the timing cover bolted on. But, for the most part, consult the many HG swap threads.

Good luck!
