So I went to Pep Boys yesterday.....

Actually, I went yesterday and Monday. Now I know what everyone's thinking, "Why the hell would you go there anyways?".

First off, I needed a torque wrench fast and cheap, which I got (and it actually works).

Second, and now on to the funny part, I was looking for the gommets, o-rings, and the other rubber things at the tip of the fuel injectors cuz I was missing one and a second one is a bit crushed. I showed it to one guy and he got to searching fast. The computer wouldn't tell us if they had the rubber at the tip in stock so that was ok. So then arrives a 2nd guy, one that I have seen before many times. The first guy shows him the injector, and while he tries to explain what we're looking for, the 2nd guy says, "Oh, this is a Cam positioner sensor, what's wrong with it?". I didn't make fun of him cuz there weren't enough people around to point and laugh at him with me, so I just calmly said to him, "That's an injector......". He just gave it back, looked at how his co-worker looked at him oddly, and went to attend someone else.

Third, yesterday (Tuesday). I go back again to buy the spark plugs and to check if they have a gap gauge and a sponge. It's the 2nd guy again who gets to attend me this time! I calmly tell him that I'm looking for spark plugs for my car and he hops right to it. "$2.99 for each one", he tells me. So I reply, "NGK copper tipped with quad sparks??". His reply, "No single tipped. Wait, copper? Are you sure? We got platinum. I have never seen those copper things you're talking about."

I just told him to forget about it and went to look for my other things. You know, I go to Pep Boys cuz it's so close to my house and there's less traffic in that direction than in the direction to the other locations. It's also a lot faster, but it kinda disappoints me that, on a daily basis, they do stuff that prove just how full of shit they really are :biglaugh:

Nah, it doesn't disappoint me. I guess I should stop being lazy and travel the extra 15 minutes to the other auto parts stores.

PS: The corolla's driver's seat now can't be moved back and forth. Dunno what broke. It was the son of a friend of my mom's that had to "fix" the seat so it was forward enough so she could drive (she's 5'2"). I'm 6'4", so it's getting annoying to drive her car (hence my lazyness at driving lately).

I think it's best to use Pep Boys, Autozone, etc. for what they are good for, which is a quick/convenient place to get what you need in a pinch, or for maintaining the DD you just want to keep running on the cheap. Technical advice is best left to SM experts. ;)

That said, Pep Boys got me injector rings pretty quickly and nobody there tried to called to call it a CPS or gas tank or anything.

I had a funny experience at AZ once when I brought oil in for recycling. The girl (who said she worked there for a week) asked me exactly what oil was for. I actually answered her with a straight face.

My GF used to work for AZ. She had a customer come in and ask for "a new cylinder". My GF said "Are you talking about brakes or clutch?" The customer said, "I don't know. My mechanic said my car isn't running right because I have a bad cylinder." :nono: :biglaugh:

At least he was just a client..... that would have been hilarious if one of the mechanics at the shop said something like that :icon_surp

I'v worked at Advance and Autozone both part time, and I can tell you only 2 out of say 10-15 employees will ever be helpful. It's nice when you have repeat customers and they want you to help them over the other person, though. The reason is because you don't have to know anything about cars or how they work to have a job there. All you need to know is how to install wiper blades and put in car batteries. Not everyone that works there can even properly install a car battery. I have so many funny/horror stories from working at both stores it would crack you guys up.

I worked at Advance Auto last year when my hubby had given me the boot :icon_conf

I had always wanted to work there and applied often (because I wanted a carrelated job), but the managers always had some retarded excuse not to hire me (must speak spanish as well comes to mind).
So I finally got hired, wasn't too pleased about the bi-weekly pay. Nor was I happy with the absent minded co workers who just did what they had to do and offered nothing more.

A mk3 owner from Alabama walked in one day with his wife, and we got into a great big convo about Supras and gear lube and whatnot, while my co workers looked at me stupidly. Apparently, I was the only one there that had knowledge of something more than spark plugs, batteries and wipers.

I still go into places like Advance and Auto Zone now and wonder why the fuck it takes them 15 minutes to look up a part when their computer systems are so simple a fetus could do it. :icon_mad:

I've had asshats at AutoZone ARGUE with me, swearing up and down my Supra was carburated.

autozone is a piece of cake for me... the one right up the street from me has 2 people working there with mk3 supras... (wierd huh?) they know alot about other cars too tho...

pep boys on the other hand... i went in there one day to get something, and my friend and i were talking about mufflers. an employee overheard us and said "oh a muffler, isnt that what they put on the cars to make that rice noise?"

i just calmly said, "all cars have mufflers" and walked away...

i'm bad, i'm nationwide
tryu living in a town where your only options are o'rileys, az, and a good 'ole boys parts store that knows chevy pickups, tractors, and irrigation motors....

this had a lot to do with my decision to go sbc....not going to even try to have to find what would be seen around here as exotic car parts...
