I weighed my car today and it came out to 3598 lbs with me in it. I weigh 178 lbs to be exact. So total empty weight was 3598 - 178 = 3420lbs
I've done some weigh reductions to my car: remove complete a/c system including all the brackets, tension pulley, a/c hose/lines, condensor, condensor fan etc.(except evaporator). Also removed all the sound deadning material including the trunk, tranny tunnel, under rear seats, under front seats, and most of the firewall. Rear trunk panels were off. No spare tire. No wood piece and metal bracker for it on the trunk. I had the jack and some tools on the car though. Less than a 1/4 tank of gas. No evap canister. No cruise control. Lighter than stock exhaust (straight pipe from elbow). That's about it. I still think the car is heavy as hell though. I want to get it down to 3100 lbs and keep it looking stock like in the interior. I know there is a lot of talk about weight reduction already, but i wanted to share my experience.

not bad. I'd say leave it at that and work on other things.
I'm in the long process of building another motor that i have in my garage. For now the free mods will do for me. That way when the other motor is ready, the extra work that i'm doing right now won't set me back later.

I'm scared to ask what other heavy things you removed to make it that light. Or is it just that 86.5's were that much lighter.

it must be the targa because I have no sound detener, ac, ps, rear seats and a few other small things and my 86.5 weighs 3300 without me and about 1/4 tank.

my 88 weighed about the same as my 86.5 minus the abs. there is no other difference in the shells.

Heres some pics of my 87 I gutted awhile ago. No clue what it weighed with everything out.

Ive done more since then, like cutting away all of the foam from the dash, removing the firewall sound proofing. Still need to lose some of the extras in the engine bay and going to an aluminum driveshaft. Im hoping to get down to around 3200 with a full cage. I refuse to give up my stereo though.

i'll keep my 2lb heater core for those chilly summer nights. it's not like it weighs alot... and it helps cool down between runs at the track, too. ;)

Other than accelarating faster, i'm doing it mainly for handling purposes. I want the car to be able to handle the twisties decently and brake good.

"Lightweight Mk3" now there's an oxymoron if ever there was one :)

HAHA, so true. Yes, weight reduction is a biggie but sometimes people take it to another level. :aigo: Mine weighed in at 3,328 lbs without me.

I come from a land down under
The only real way to lighten a Mk3 is to strip put everything that makes it a Mk3 so may as well buy a Mk1/2 and be way ahead of the weight game right off and still have some 7M power bolted in! ;)
(I like my fat cars creature comforts and being able to blow away even the fastest production cars here with the aircon on)
