95db is such a dumb law when you have trains and jets that take off that way exceed that sound level
The actual smog law has nothing to do with how loud the car is. Local laws yes, but that has nothing to do with smog.
CA SMOG says, the exhaust has to be stock and complete until the last emissions component. So if you have a post cat O2 sensor, you could basically cut off the exhaust after the 02 sensor, and drive it to the shop that way. If you dont have that sensor you could cut it off after the last cat. Thats why "cat-backs" are so popular, they dont have to be approved by CARB.
Long story short, you can put on any "cat-back" system you want.

Get something with dual tip like Magnaflow if you want to look stock. N1 or canister types will be the norm when it come to aftermarket cat back setup with the exception of Tanabe. Do not mess with your cat's or down pipe if you truly want to remain legal. Most downpipes are for off road use only, meaning they delete your cat converter. I have to pay to pass my MKIII. But to me it's worth the extra cash. Cops don't hassle you unless you give them a good reason. I'm young, hispanic, my MKIII is black with limo tint. My exhaust is pretty loud but if you know how to drive it it'll do just fine.
Its pretty easy to pass without the cat on dp if the heat shields are in place. Painting it black helps too. The best dual tip options right now are the raptor racing and hks units.
Muffler dont matter as stated for emissions. How loud it is tho will directly effect on weather you get pulled over.'
I have a big shiney muffler with a hug tip.:naughty: But its also only 92db and i have a ca state ref sticker. If i do get pulled over for something else they ask about it but once i show the sticker they say no more.

ive been pulled over in sacramento cause of my tint, but i have out of state plates, so he just told me to drive with my windows down....funny thing was my exhaust was cut from dp back
Cat back only in California. Technically, all downpipes are 50 state illegal. Lack of enforcement of the visual standard lets people get away with it.
