What type of lifters do they use in the 7m-ge? Hydraulic?

I think when I was test driving my new car I heard some lifter noise... dunno, wasnt very loud, but something was there... I'm new to working on cars and dont know a whole lot... but I was just wondering if it would benifit from an adjustment... I dont have the car yet, and I've been reading a lot about rod knocking noise, I hope it isnt that, I doubt it is, it was rebuilt 37,000 miles ago...

Any ideas?

dont be so doubtfull.. knock has nothing to do with when the engine was built. hell some people get rod knock on initial start-up from a fresh build

alright, well the sound seemed to come from the top end of the motor, so I figured lifters...

also, didnt sound like a knocking, it was more a ticking sound..

If you think it is rod knock, start removing the plugs one at a time and get under the hood and listen while you rev the manually, by hand. I f it rod knock, it'll probably show up around cylinders 5 or 6. Your engine will probably sound like your mothers sewing machine. if it's ticking like that your'e in the clear. You would probably know if it was rod knock. it would sound a bit aggresive, and your heart speeds up like a 60 year old man with a 20 year old hooker. ha

If it's a rod knock it sounds like as sewing machine?

yea, come to think of it, it was a little ticking noise coming from all of the cylinders... sounding like a sewing machine, (sounds like the car that was in the dyno test video when it was idleing).... so worst case is I might have to replace a couple of the lifters, or I think it could be that oil isn't getting to them and getting stuck somewhere, because it was all good after running for a while... (driving past a big wall of concrete couldnt hear any bad noises or anything..)... I'll try running some cleaner through them to see if it goes away.

my dad was talking about some cleaner you can put in with the oil that clears out all the clogs or something like that... dont quote me on it tho.

Sigh...

#1 - There are NO LIFTERS in a 7M/1JZ or 2JZ motor. They are all double overhead cam motors. The cams sit directly on shim buckets that ride directly on top of the valves. Aside from shimming the valves on build, and possibly again after a couple of hundred thousand miles, there's no adjustments to be made.

Here's a diagram that may help:

#2 - Fuel injectors are supposed to make a ticking noise. The "sewing machine" noise you describe sounds like 100% normal engine operation.
