This was a topic of discussion the other night at the local mini meet.

Do we have as a community a "shim bank" for the shims on the 7m engines?

If we did at one time or SOGI used to have one, where is it now?

Can we start one or what do you guys think about this?

Personally, I think it's a great idea if people would be respectful and not abuse the system. SOGI used to do it, but I think it died off several years ago. It's an excellent idea in theory. How well or how long it would actually work is the problem.

The problem is that people usually need the thicker shims, so you end up with a bank of thin shims. :(

You never know Grim, we could get lucky and get some of the thicker ones too. I'm sure there is more than a couple of guys out there with old thrashed heads that probably have seen a valve job or two. Might just have thicker shims on 'em. It's one of those deals where people have to actually participate, that may end up being the tough part. Gotta promote the hell out of it. I think it's a good idea.

Of course we would also have to rely on each others ability to mic out and record shim thickness and keep it separated. Did this system have some sort of website that was constantly updated? We could simply make a section on Supramania called "Shim Bank." Would we just figure some sort of standard shipping rate or what?

Dave Henry used to loan out the shim kit (contained about 50+ shims) and I kinda use to manage whom had it last. I know have the shim kit in my garage but have since terminated the loan program. MoFo's use to remove shims and not replace them with the one being replaced. So essentially, the box was pilfered. I've since reaccumulated over 100+ shims, but I have no interest in loaning out the kit.
Similarly, I use to loan out my lapping tool, but stop doing this because of the lack of care the borrowers demonstrated :(.

how about everyone just lists what they have, and makes sure they measure properly. that way each individual would take the shipping cost, rather than one person.

I have 2 heads hence 48 shims myself and they're all thinner than what I need. I think last time I checked I had 24 sitting on my shelf, and I still needed to order 12 from somewhere to make my good head work right. I'd be in for trading my shims to get some larger ones. I need like .120 up to .130 (I know...pretty large) to make everything work, currently I've got 24 shims ranging from .110 to .116 IIRC
