Shifting into Reverse

Guys, lately it has gotten hard for me to shift my 91 Turbo into reverse. Sometimes it will not go into gear, so I have to let the clutch out and put if back in, and it usually goes into gear with a pop

First gear is tough as well if the wheels are moving at all. Since I am getting ready to drop a rebuilt block in the old girl I figured I'd ask about this as well.

Thanks

both of my cars do this, its common because reverse isn't synchronized. Just push in the clutch and hold it there for a few seconds so that the intermediate shaft stops spinning, or you can shift into a forward gear and then shift into reverse. As for first gear, my car doesn't go in unless im at a dead stop unless I blip the throttle. Rev-matching is your friend.

try shifting from 1st to reverse. crazy, but it works. and its not a clutch issue. mine does that and i just replaced it about a year ago. same now as it ws then.

It sounds like it's time to get new synchros, iirc horsepowerfreaks has a rebuild kit. It's either them or one of the popular supra websites..

Reverse is not synchronized. Well, on $80,000 cars is sometimes is.

i normally go from 1st, to 2nd and then to reverse, and it goes in more often than when i go from 1st to reverse, iobviously dont shift, just move the shifter there with the clutch in

As far as reverse, all of these solutions just move the gears around the small amount necessary for them to mesh; like they said, its not synchronized.

As far as 1st gear goes, you can try a different fluid with little/no friction modifier in it (Redline 75W-90NS) and see if it helps. Unfortunately my money is on the synchro, since I have been through 3 different oils all with similar results for the exact same problem you have.

Yeah, reverse can be tricky regardless of the car's age. Even my tC has had instances of not going into Reverse (10K miles on it); the 2nd gear to Reverse thing has always worked for me on both tC and Supra.

By the way, if you are having any shifting problems, I would highly recommend replacing the shifter bushing. I put a new one in there, along with a new shifter seat and Redline MT90 gear oil, and the tranny shifts 10 times better now. I still grind it into 3rd on occasion, but it shifts into 1st and 2nd like butter. :D

when i first learned that reverse isnt syncronized i was slowly coasting forward and went to go stick it in reverse... nasty suprise there. reverse to first is ok though :D lol. yeah my reverse gives me issues to... i hit 4th gear then reverse and if that doesnt work i'll blip the clutch so the gears get bumped, let the tranny slow down so it doesnt grind, and then pop it in.

it REALLY sucks when you need to get out of the way in a hurry and the only way to go is backward huh? the other day i was too far out of a side droad onto a main street and was trying desperatly to get it in reverse to scoot back...wasnt working. kinda scary acutally...

I have the same problem with mine man. Brand new clutch a couple thousand miles ago.
My 1st and 3rd gears aren't too smooth either. The pulling the clutch out and pushing it back in works for me usually, or like everyone else said, 1st, 2nd then reverse.

edit:
can't seem to find the syncro rebuild thing on horsepower?
how much does those run?

This is the only thing I could find using yahoo real quick as I've got to be heading off to work. http://www.drivetrain.com/toyotaR150rwd.html It mentions the tranny being r150, you may want to contact them and confirm. It really pisses me off that I can't find which website I had seen the synchro kit on: I looked at HPF, suprasport, and suprastore and couldn't find it. Granted I did a quick search, it may not be under the transmission section, it could be under a misc section.
