Well my school auto and metal shops have been building a kit car of a Shelby Cobra. It started last year when my metal teacher started obsessing over building one of the cars from a local company that does it. This company makes the Replica's to the specs you want using mostly Ford mustang 5.0 parts.
http://www.factoryfive.com/
They sell kits to the public with most of the Cobra replica parts and you can build it from a donor Mustang
This is the kit we bought- The MKIII heh
http://www.factoryfive.com/table/ffrkits/roadster/roadsterkit.html

So the car had been making mostly slow steady progression for the past 5 months. We acquired two Mustangs, an 87 and an 89, both in crap condition but they were free and between the two of them we had mostly everything we needed.

This morning we got the engine in. A 302 rebuilt to 330hp with edelbrock intake, exhaust manifolds, and possibly a S/C if we can raise the money:aigo:
The car only weighs 2,000lbs and if we can shoot for the Supercharger It will be over 400horsepower...
Think of a Lotus Elise, with 400hp.

Here are some pics, sorry they were taken from my camera phone

Last week before we had the engine in I was standing in the engine bay and pushing the chassis across the shop. A friend of mine yells out "I didn't know we were putting a 1JD twin turbo in this?!?" (my initials are JD)
Everyone has either yelled at me or given me dirty looks every time I say we should put an Inline 6 in it:biglaugh:

The project is supposed to be running and finished by June but we'll see how that goes. I'll post of pics and vids when I can.

i wish I had teachers that would do stuff like that...my old auto teacher didn't know anything beyond his old ford pickup, and we spent most of the time in the shop tearing apart lawnmower engines.

My Auto teacher sucks. We hate the guy. He was the home ec. teacher like 8 years ago but tries to hide that fact. He's pretty knowledgable about cars... but can't teach for shit.

He always brings his piece of crap boat in and has us doing stupid jobs on that, not automotive related at all. A kid broke a window last year and he was only allowed to work on lawnmowers for 2 weeks. The teacher actually went around and asked other teachers if they needed their lawnmowers fixed.

I'll definetly get up pics of the body soon (not sitting on the chassis yet) and once it's all together in probably a month or so I'll get on that.

I agree Clip, I brought the Supra in once to install my TT. I didn't let anyone touch it and only me and a friend I trusted could go near it. Well turned out there's no stopping idiots. My seat got reclined all the way and it's been broken ever since. I could always trust the class before me that graduated last year as they all love cars and when I looked away I would come back to a car that has been vacuumed and my windows washed instead of things broken.

i wish my school had the funding for that sort of thing, i did comp animation instead of collision repair, dont regret it but still wonder what i missed out on.

and dont take your car to class, i didnt trust anyone at my school to touch cars, especially the guy that had the habit of jumping onto the hood of my tempo with both feet and making faces at me.

We funded the project ourselves. Mostly from donations from local shops and having "pizza nights" where we got local Papa Gino's or Mcdonalds to give some of proceeds from a night to us.

Haha we had an 88 Tempo as a shop car until we destroyed it. We were going to drop a spare 302 in it but decided against it when we went to pull the 4cyl and realized it was too much work for something we'd just laugh at and never put forth the effort.

That is my next project. Well, maybe their GTM.

I was ready to buy the kit, but my wife asked me to get something that I can haul both kids around in, so I bought my Supra instead. Regardless, my Supra will be my DD and I will have a Factory 5 in my garage.

The GTM is pretty crazy, The last time I was at Factory 5, in the showroom they had the owners MKIII(cobra) that he races, a standard MKIII kit, a GTM and a Shelby Series 1. They started up the GTM and the MKIII in the showroom and it shook the entire warehouse. The owner thought someone was taking his car so he rushed out of his office. haha
It's alot of work building yourself, most people take 3 years on average to complete it, and $20-40 thousand dollars. But I'd definetly love to have one in the future.

Lol that is sweet that you guys are even allowed to do that in auto class.

My 'auto' class is called diesel tech. And it its fairly useful. We work on big diesel engines but at least its an engine, with basically the same parts as a normal motor. We'd never get a project like that though. :nono:
