so my car has done this for a while but i figured i would get the more major problem out of the way before i tackled this one.

so between about 45 and 55 mph(worsens if i am between about 2,700 and 3,000 rpm's) my car shakes. it is not the suspension it has been chacked out and aligned it has to be something in the auto trany or in the 7mgt. my thought is that it could be a bad harmonic balancer but not sure.

any ideas
thanks

sloppy lower ball joints, lack of hubcentric rings, and lack of a pilot bearing in the crank, all caused similar vibrations on mine..

Possibly an unbalanced tire. I used to have major headaches getting the tires on my Celica balanced. Always had to bring it back 2-3 times, and changing tires at least once a year it got rather annoying.

It would vibrate the steering wheel like mad.

When you say it shakes and vibrates, is it in the steering wheel or in your seat? If it is in the steering wheel, I would lean more towards tires being out of balance. Mine has a similar gremlin. Only sometimes will the steering wheel shake at say 68 mph, sometimes the vibration-speed is higher and sometimes it is lower, sometimes it doesn't vibrate at all. After many trips to the tire shop to get them balanced, I think I have a lower control arm bushing issue since I already changed the lower ball joints with the OEM ones.

Now if it is in your seat I would lean more towards a driveline out of balance issue--i.e. worn center carrier bearing or worn or binding u-joint.

I read where one member of the community had both issues steering and driveline vibrations, changed the center carrier bearing, and all the vibrations ceased. I wouldn't think the two would be linked but, thats what the post said.
Hope this helps you, PM me if you have some specific questions I might be able to help you with.

Good luck and I apologize for kinda hijacking your thread

those are some great ideas but i am almost posative that it is in the drive line. the shaking is in the seat for sure very little vibration is translated through the steering wheel.

the shaking is also in a very spacific rpm range and speed range.
if i am racing or just halling ass and i accelerate(1/2 to full throttle) through that range i dont feel any shaking it is just during steady state driving.

if that helps with anymore ideas.

no prob on the hijacking as long as i can get this solved!

well i have narrowed it down alittle it is not in the alignment, i have had that fixed and it was only off alittle bit. (i was told)

I still have no idea what the problem is through!!
could something in the trany be off balance?

my g/f discribes it "like you are sitting on an off balance washingmachine". why she was sitting on an off balance washing machine i dont know but that is another topic!

Check the center carrier bearing on the drive shaft. A friend of mine had the same problem around the same speeds. Because the Drive shaft on the supra is a two part drive shaft it has a carrier bearing that holds the center of it up. When the rubber get old it tends to let the drive shaft vibrate. Go under the car and grab the drive shaft near the bearing and see if it moves side to side or up and down. If so you need a new carrier bearing.

Ok, here is the other problem. When buying a new carrier bearing for the auto parts store ( Auto Zone,Murray's) it comes up as the right part in the computer, but when they order it, it is the wrong one(The mounts on it are different). We check with other places but the same part number. Toyota wanted a lot for it so what we did was take the old one out and drill out the pinch welds on the casing removing the old rubber mount and bearing. We then removed the new rubber section and bearing from the new mount and placed it in the old mount. We then got three bolts and nuts and put them were we drilled out the pinch welds. It work great and the vibration went away.
Hope this helps.

None of your fucking business
Get your tires balanced. The wieghts can fall off, especially on custom wheels where they stick em on. Happend to me on my old truck, I thought the wheel was falling off...

Process of elimination. Do the easy stuff first.

the way to test for a bad motor mount is the put the car in drive and hold the brake while pressing the gas in my old camry a shop did this and the motor tapped the hood hard.

update

the really bad shaking was due to my MAFT detuning its self but now that it has been retuned i took the car to my guy at toyota and he said that the fuel injector are going from really strong to very low flow and i dont think the MAFT can fix that to i am going to upgrade again to a AEM EMS and then i will let you know if i can tune it out or not. thank for all the help if you have any ideas on how else to fix this

Aaron
