Here lies the problem.
IMG_20140715_160812223.jpg

This is the oil pipe from my turbo.
I put the turbo on the engine yesterday.
When I got to tightening these 2 nuts on the manifold (in picture), I tried torquing them to 25 ft lbs and the nuts just kept spinning...
Both nuts are spinning. The studs must be stripped.
I can spin the nuts both ways but I can not remove the nut, I have tried many different combinations of flatheads, vicegrips, sockets.

I FEAR I HAVE HIT A ROADBLOCK BEYOND FIXING
You guys are my only real option. Local mechanics are horrible, and refuse to work on engines that have been worked by private parties.
Local tool/fastener shops are even less helpful.
I've been told to give up.
..But how in Supra's name can I give up on my baby... my 86 mkiii...

WHAT I NEED
I need to get the nuts off so I can get the turbo off, so I can get the studs out.
And then I need to REPLACE THE 2 STUDS.

Is this even possible? Can these studs be removed from the block?
I'm sending out an SoS to the world.

I got one piece of advice that may work.
I was told to drill out the studs using a left handed drill bit. It should bite and spin the stud out.

Has anyone got experience with this method?

grab the stud with a stud removal socket, that may work. you can also get a tool that will break the nut, then you can just remove the stud.

Does the stud spin? Or just the nut?

If you can spin the stud: Lock vice grips on the stud (on end like this: <-- ) leaving room to access the nut with an open wrench. Pull back on the vise grips while un-tightening the nut.
If you can spin the nut only: Careful dremel work on the base of the nut could probably release any existing pressure holding the stud in. You're likely to hit the stud, but it's likely a lost cause anyway.

I've never quite had an issue like that that wasn't fixable with some vice grip force.

Good luck.

PS: this is exactly why many machine shops are hesitant to take on work done by someone else. It's easy to hit a roadblock caused by previous work.

I bought myself a inch lb wrench for my recent 7m build so i could accurately do all those smaller torque numbers, it came in handy and allowed me to re-use my first oil drain gasket a few times before is started weeping. 25lbs is going to cause a bad time M'kay.
good luck getting them out, it's possible.

i was looking at this page for torque spec.. http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?S=TC&P=9
my bad.

Just the nut spins. Both nuts are this way which means it was likely my fault,
and your second point is a very good point I am now coming to realize this.

sorry I didn't include much useful information on my original post.
Thanks for the responses, this problem is basically solved! (assuming I dont F this up)

BTW anyone know where I can get a gasket for ct26 oil pipe?
I was using a Gasket Maker (siliconey paste) and I'm not sure if that will do the trick or not.
Thoughts? Can't seem to find any gasket material to cut my own

I would in no way make my own gaskets unless I was in the middle of no where. Then again the factory gasket would probably not leak. I am amazed how some people go so far away from what make the Supra's special in the first place. Great Toyota engineering and parts. Then they have the nerve to complain about stupid HG failure or I just rebuilt my engine and now it knocks. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Use known good parts. IMO Rebuild a engine and use Toyota OEM , from a dealer, overhaul set and a HKS head gasket. Make sure the machine uses the Factory valve seals that come in the kit so 3000 miles latter. " My just rebuilt engine smokes on start up.

Also common sense would dictate that a 8 x1.25 fastener would not take 25 ft lbs of torque. You have been better of using a 1/4 ratchet. Ever think that is why they offer different drive sizes of ratchets. 1/4" drive for small nuts and bolts. IE 8,10,and 12mm nuts and bolts heads.

Most failure caused by poor parts and lack of experience. And properly reading the TSRM. Then if some one offers to do a quality job everyone says that is way to much money.

Sorry for the rant if so perceived. Good luck.

BTW you could probably use a drimel tool to cut off the nuts and run a die over studs if ok.

can you possibly point me in the direction of the 8x 1.25 nuts that are used on this engine? I will need to purchase some as soon as possible.
Thanks

I will also likely need new studs to replace the stripped ones.. anyone know where I can find those?

a local dealer can get them for you or you can order from a number of online suppliers. it's worth spending the extra dollar or 2 for OEM gaskets rather than have leaking oil.

champion toyota (maybe?)
driftlotion

Yes.

just get a roll of gasket material and make your own. you'll always have extra. any parts store will have it.

No.

like just a standard toyota dealer? online i guess maybe is the only way?

Any Toyota dealer will offer most parts still available. Some dealers will mark up parts like crazy. Use Champion as a reference. They show pricing online. Then call your local dealer and see how much they're screwing you over. If it's only a little, then buy local. If they're charging more than $10 than Champion you may as well order online. Some dealers REALLY gouge on part prices.

Studs are available at most hardware stores.

The nuts can also be found at hardware stores although I like only using flange bolts and nuts. Some stores don't carry flange metric bolts in which case you need to source them online. Google "metric flange nuts M8". Just make sure you get the proper thread pitch (1.25/1.5/1.0 etc...)
