correct, sir. and to add to it:

in '89.5+ cars, the HAC sensor is built in the ECU, whereas on 87-88 turbo cars, the HAC is external, and mounts under the glove box area.

the harness to bod plugs are completely different (hence, why they are not interchangable between yearspans)

and a few other misc. plugs are different on the engine side. (about 4 1-wire connectors)

WRONG........i have an early 89.......all 89's have the grey plugs and 89+ ECU and sensors. The difference lies with the interface with the body harness in the engine bay, which resembles an 88 harness more than the 89+. This would enable you to put an early 89 engine harness into an 86.5-88 if you had the right ecu and sensors.

For clarity:
86.5-88 yellow plugs
early 89 grey plugs (internal HAC 89+ ECU) and 89+ sensors, but 88 style body harness
late 89+ grey plugs, new sensors and newer style body harness. Will not fit on anything prior to mid 89
