Sell MK3 and get MK4?

So I've had this '88 automatic supra for a couple years now and just checked out a nice '94 mk4 automatic today. They look so much better in person than in pictures. The guy has put a $4k nav system in it, bazooka tube, switched out engine so it only has about 50k on it, brand new leather seats from toyota, blah blah overall its a really clean car.

So should I sell my '88 and motorcycle + put in about $10k for the '94 supra or just put that $10k into my stock '88?

What would you guys do?

How long have you had your 88? I'm going to go out on a limb and say you probably know every little thing that needs work on the 88. The 94 is a completely unknown. Why did he replace the engine? That throws a red flag for me right there. And then there is the variable of the replacement engine. How ragged out is it?

You will be very wise to have this thing checked over VERY carefully before signing anything. You could wind up in a position where the 94 will actually cost you MORE to maintain than the 88.

Me personally? I like the body lines of the MkIII better. The MkIV has a killer engine. I'd spend that $10Gs and put the engine in the 88.

I've had the mk3 for about 3 years now. The guy said in his Indian accent 'The ah previous engine used to ah have a little ah smoke ah when I ah start it up. I no like that so I ah replace it.'

The odometer has over 100k on it but he said the new engine has only about 50k.

Yeah I previously liked the mk3 lines better but seeing this nice black mk4 in person was so nice. Got a lot of looks during my 5 minute test drive.

2JZ + MK3 plus a kick ass suspension + good tires (and a little performance mods :D) = MK4 ass kicker. and on a budget too. also i was wonderign myself, is there a mk3 with the mk4 6 speed rolling around?

In the end it is all your decision.

Replacing the entire engine to fix a "little smoke" is like changing your entire wardrobe because you have one shirt that has a hole in it.

if I had $10k to spend, i'd do a 2jz swap into my car. (or another, more clean chassis) like stated already, 2jz mk3's kick ass.

(i still love the 7m, though)

in all honesty, i like mk3's better. i love the lines. i wouldnt mind having an mkIV for a daily driver.

Yeah but this either the mk3 or mk4 will be my daily driver. I'm guessing that a mk3 w/2jz engine plus a fat ass turbo isnt gunna get very good mileage. Will be fun but gas is killer these days. I dunno, I've become very fond of my mk3 over the couple of years that I've had it. I think I'll go with what the most of you guys suggest (on this mk3-biased forum ;)) and stick with my '88 and finally put some money into it. So, 2jz engine, some suspension, definitely new rotors to replace the squeaky stock pieces of shit, paint job...What do you think all of that stuff will cost all said and done? I'm not a very mechanical guy so I'll probably have pay to have it installed. Anyone know how much the average mechanic will charge to do an engine swap (7mge->1/2jz)

Theres no way a 2JZ could have gone bad after 50k. This is toyota we're talking about. I call BS on the replaced engine. Either that or this guy really doesn't know how to take care of his car. Either way, if you wanna get a MKIV, don't get that one.

It was in an accident so the engine probably got screwed when that happened. Yeah when I checked the coolant and oil levels, they were both fairly low...Rear right suspension also squeaked like crazy when I drove it. He said it was a suspension bushing or something...

It is starting to sound more and more like that MkIV would be a bigger money pit than your MkIII. Not a wise choice to sell a known MkIII to get into that MkIV.

Save your pennies. If you REALLY want a MkIV then be prepared to spend some serious time looking - and some hefty coin purchasing. If you want a GREAT car that isn't a MkIV then upgrade your 88.

Sounds like a rip off anyway, your car, a bike and 10k for a crashed mk4 with an engine no one knows anything about, runs on low oil and coolant and a shot suspension? Uhh... I don't think so.

i've seen it done... theres a power blue one from socal if i remember correctly they had to move the engine forward a bit to get the tranny/shifter to sit in the right spot... it was a CLEAN swap too...

i'd stash the my mkIII, and take it as a forgotten car and not even consider it as a monetary asset and start saving from scratch for mkIV, dont think i could sell the supe that i dont consider its monetary value anymore. its on my list of possibles now that im saving, Evo 9, charger r/t, or mkIV.

start saving and have both.
