Here is the whole story, it is a bit long, but I need to tell it all:
I replaced my heater coil. I removed the dash and did the job over the weekend. When I put it all together, it worked great. Drove the car when I finished on sunday evening and then drove it to work on monday. At lunch, I opened the door and thought it was funny that none of the lights went on when I opened the door and even funnier that no dash lights lit up when I put the key in the ignition. Tried to turn it over and nothing, no clicks no whine no dash lights nothing. I thought I had a dead battery. I tried the headlights, and they came on. I tried the emergency flashers, and they worked. I went back to work, and later that day, I went out and thought I would try locking the door and unlocking it. When I did it started. I was a fool, and I shut it off to see if I could start it again, but no. I finished my day and came out to try one last time, I put the key in the door and turned it as if to lock it, the horn and lights go off. I immediately turned the key to unlock it and the alarm shut off. I got in, still no lights , no dash lights and no start.
I left the car overnight. The next afternoon, I was looking under the hood and a guy asked if I needed a jump, I said no that it was just the security alarm messing up. He told me to take the positive lead from the battery off and ground it. He said it would reset the computer system. I did that, and it started right up. I drove the car home immediately and noticed that every time I put my foot on the brake, the dash lights would flicker and the radio would go off momentarily then come back on. I got it home, shut it off and it wouldn't restart. I let it sit overnight.
I read on the forums how to disconnect the security system. I unplugged the box on the steering column up by the firewall. The car seemed to start and run fine, but I could still arm the alarm. Someone told me the box might be the cruise control, but it still works too.
I just finished changing the spark plugs and the valve cover gaskets. It started right up after I connected the battery cable. I took it for a drive and noticed that when I stepped on the brake, it caused the dash lights to flicker. And sure enough, when I got home and tried to restart it, it was back to the no lights and no starting again.
I have gone back and reconnected all the connectors that were unplugged when I took the dash out. I double checked the ground wires that I disconnected. I checked the ground from the battery. All of that seems fine.
Where should I go from here?????
