Is it illegal to have seatbelts that dont have that locking mechanism on it. Today, i took it off my back seat seatbelts. Both of the locking mechanisms were seized shut so, the seatbelts couldnt move. I took the mechanism off and now they work great....but dont lock if I slam on the brakes or what have you.

So is this illegal? I still have a seatbelt, it just doesnt lock anymore. lol

No, it isn't illegal because it still connects up visibly, and that's what a cop looks for. But this new fancy mod you have allows you to reach terminal velocity in a collision pretty damn quick, no matter from what direction your car is hit.

Recommendation: find out where the fault is, FIX IT. Don't gamble on your life.

Don't let anyone sit back there until it's fixed.

If it was legal to not wear a seatbelt, I still would. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Thanks guys. I know it isnt safe at all. But I would rather someone have something around them than nothing at all. Because before I took the said mechanism off, you couldnt even put on the seat belt.
But Ill look into buying a new one. I just wanted to make sure that it wasnt illegal.

The chick that sits back there (shes the only one who has ever), just made the comment, "I dont care if it locks, because by the time it would lock, my face would already meet the back of the front seat." Lmao. Wow.

Thanks again. And Ill look into buying a new mechanism or seatbelt.

why even use the seat belt then

However, I am glad that you're gonna fix it before letting her sit back there again.

are you pre-89 or 89+?

Pre-89's are pre-threaded for 3 point belts, but you have to cut out the rear plastics or find an 89+ rear section..

Im 89+. Ill be fixing it tomorrow. My father has and 89 and he is getting ready to set up is car for racing (meaning gut most of the rear). So Ill just grab his seatbelts from him.
