Hi everyone,

guess you guys "over the pond" can help me much quicker then the EU supra guys :)

I need a picture from the tail light center of a 89+ Supra, but not from the front -> I need the rear view of it (especially the place where the lock is located and how it is mounted on the center piece).

Why?
Because I am currently changing the tail lights from swiss EU Spec (=pre-facelift US spec) to the facelift JDM ones (should be all identical to the facelift US ones besides the colour).
The EU guys can´t help me, as they have other tails, especially the boot locks and the operation of it are not the same and, on top of it, not in the same place. :icon_bigg

I thought it would be an easy plug&play change, but the lock making me wonder, how it is mounted... maybe the seller forgot a mounting part or something.

Thanks a lot in advance!

The 89+ (USDM/JDM) locks are different.
You'll either have to get the correct lock to go with the tail lights (and have it re-keyed to match the rest of the car) or remove the outer lense, drill two holes in the backing and bolt the lock cylinder in place.
I did the second method and it worked brilliantly, only complaint is the lock is sunk in a bit and the handle of the key just barley clears the lense.

That's how mine is too on my 88

Not sure if USDM/JDM lenses are different at all, but I bought a second set to tint out, and when I switched them over, I didn't feel like messing with the lock or the wiring or anything.

So what I did is just pop the lens off the new center section and swap it with the lens that's already on the car. the trim piece is going to be the same, so as long as the keyhole lines up, which it should, then they should just swap right over.

Hi everyone.

Thanks for the answers so far.
Shot 2 pics to make the problem visible:

This is the swiss EU-Spec rear (actually my car), it should be identical to the pre-facelift U.S ones:

pay attention to the license plate section and the lock section.

Next pic is a standard EU-spec (never changed through the whole years of selling the Supra in Germany):

As you can see, totally different, even the lock is located somewhere else.

And now for my actual problem:

backside of my "old" center section with the lock (unscrewed):

you can clearly see the thread in the metal for mounting/screwing the lock in.

This is the backside of my JDM tail light center:

looking totally different.
The lock section is with 3 plastic pins/noses, where (I guess) you can "click" you lock onto.

Would be great, if someone over here, who changed from pre-facelift US to facelift US tail lights could tell me, how he mounted the lock.

Thanks a lot!

PS: if the pics are too big, just let me know.

pretty sure I swapped the lock internals and reused the bracket...89+

PM me an email address and I will send a photo today.. this way I don't have to host it from my phone...

I had to have a locksmith rekey/rework my locks as they were old...
