Yep, it's definitely a tank.
You can watch a video clip of a MKIII crashed in a German TV series here.
This MKIII crashed into a guardrail at approx. 150kph/95mph, the driver was not harmed and even the doors are still opening and closing smoothly :D

Yeah... definately a tank. I(my car) had a fight with a cinderblock wall (dont ask me how I got there) and it lost. The wall didnt budge... no crack no nothing. The car did what it was supposed to do... collapse to save the driver. As a result, I came out unscaved. Just 2 minor seatbelt burns that was it. Can send u a pic or 2 if u'd like.

In 95 I was rearended by a Woman in a Corolla. I realize the weight difference. And it was slow, rush hour pace. Just your typical woman not paying attention. Anyway, her front end was totally smashed. I had a scratch on the bumper.

It is a heavy car with a very stiff body for a unibody, and no frame.

I come from a land down under
In 99 I was rear ended by a Holden Commodore (a few 100 KG's lighter than a Mk3) Like Nick my car had a couple of scratches and it peeled one of the Pinstripes off the rear bumper as the tow bar took the brunt of the impact.

The Commodore was trashed!

I was approaching a set of lights and they were just changing I considered running them but as there were 3 Police cars parked at the side I figured I better stop the guy in the Commodore couldn't! (I saw him coming and gassed it but it was too late)

Neither of us could believe how bad his car was and how good mine was I was expecting the back of it to be crumpled when I got out!
(this would have been a bad thing as I was 500 miles from home)

i read a thing on safey for the MKIII on reviewcenter.com (I think thats the site) someone entered a story about how he was pulled of on the side of the road and got rear ended by a F-150 going 60 mph, crushed the gas tank and completely smashed the back of the supra but the driver and three pasengers walked away unharmed

I remember reading an article about the 1986, when it first came out, pre-turbo option.
They were interviewing the designer, and head of the Supra program. He stated that the car was too heavy, but that Toyota designed it that way for a reason. They wanted to make sure the Targa did not compromise the crash worthiness of the car, and they wanted it to be squeek and rattle free for many years and 200,000+ miles. Basicly said it could be 500lbs lighter, but it would have been not nearly as safe and rattle free as the design is now.

This car was designed to compete with the Corvette, and the removable targa top was deemed a key element since the Vette has the removable top.

My mate bought a wrecked mk3 for a engine transplant. The car had hit a power pole at 120kph and rolled. The car was a writeoff. There were 3 ppl in the car.The reason why it crashed was the idiot in the back seat ripped up the handbrake at highspeed and the driver lost control. The 2 ppl in the front got away unscathed while the idiot in the back got a broken arm.
mk3 = Bigass tank.

i drove into a gate, a big metal parking garage gate. lets just say the gate was obliterated, and my windshield smashed.. but the front bumper only had scratches and wasnt even pushed in the slightest bit. still perfectly aligned.

if youve barely driven it, and you expect to drive it without doing major work. Well, dont expect to. Especially with an 86.5, the oldest model MKIII, there WILL be worn out things. Unless the car was superbly maintained on schedule every time.

Not trying to ruin your fun, just suggesting that you drive the thing further, as if you dont fully investigate the car you won't understand what there truly is wrong with it. It's not really a question of if theres something broken, its what is broken.
