ok, minus a few little flaws my factory paint is in good shape, except on my driver side rear quarter panel. Im wondering if a good body shop can fix the rust and match the paint well enough so it looks stock?

like i had friends say they can fix the rust and just shoot it with some primmer but thats about it..i want to keep the midnight blue color

I wonder how much your 20 year old paint has faded if the body shop you choose uses the stock color :sarcasm:

I've seen a couple members cut out the section that has rust, cut the same piece off of a rust-free donor car and weld in it its place. I wouldn't trust a "local body shop" that will just bondo it, or you will see bubbly paint and reoccuring rust in your future.

it rusts from the inside. that is all i have to add. and if your going to fix it, the longer you wait the worse it will be.

what if you sand all the rust off and then bondo it? Wouldn't that be fine?

sand, sand blast, use a rust dissolving chemical, use a rust converting chemical, then use bondo. Do not just sand and bondo. See www.eastwoodco.com for some solutions to rust.

it really depends on how bad it is.. and until you get the paint off there, youre not gonna know. you could (probably if its bad enough to rust through the paint in spots) be chasing rust that's under the paint all the way down the quarter panel before you can sand through the paint without hitting orange spots.. just like everyone said- do it right the first time. you might end up having to resurface/ repaint more of the quarter than you originally expected, but it's worth it in the long run.

i just put a junkyard rear quarter on my car, because it was wrecked when i bought it.. had the quarter repainted and the paint faded over the roof line. doesnt look bad, but there will be a noticeable difference in the sheen of the finish, especially if the paint thats on your car is all original right now. midnight blue sounds like a pretty forgiving color as far as room for indiscrepancy in the hue goes. mine's silver! haha.. talk about a pain.

but good luck man, if youre gonna do it, spend some time.
