Well, the supra and i are soon to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. The body is pretty clean aside from the hatch, where the spare tire well has cancer(rust). I was just wondering if anyone has ever done this...

I haven't been under the car to see if there is any value to the well aside from obvious reasons(structural support?)... But i was thinking about eliminating the entire well and having a body shop install a flat piece in it's place. Sorry for the crude illustration, but just to make sure there are no misunderstandings. This would be the view from behind the car:

So? Anyone?

This is probably the most common rust spot for the supra... I think that if you were to have that done I would DEFINITELY like to see a pic of it. I just left it after using an entire can of some cheap rust dissolver and put some FatMat over it as well as around the entire hatch. Sounds like it would be really unique and I would definitely go for it if you feel safe enough with those 4 tires. :)

Way to steal my future plans! Ya, that is perfect, then you can just carry around 1-2 cans of quick-inflate and not that spare, save some weight. Also, the reason I wanted to make it flat in the back like you showed is to fit a fuel cell where the well was hanging under the car, then you could tuck it up nicely, and run the exhaust straight back and exit on the right side, as the gas tank would no longer be in the way. That's what I planned to do in the future anyway...
I say go for it dude.

sure you could do it.... it just seems like such a waste of space, i dunno.... you could put a speaker enclosure in there.... or make some hidden compartment to hold your tools or whatever.... i'm always looking for extra space to put stuff in this car i'd hate to lose space!

Yeah the rust is pretty bad in my well too... I had a wirebrush type attachment for my drill and knocked off a majority of it, but the rust was so bad in a few small places that it did go through. Even went as far as spraying it flat black with some rust preventative crap... But it didnt help.

As far as no spare... I don't make any really long trips with the car(over 15-20 miles) and you can grab a yearly triple a membership for 90 bucks. If you are stuck on the side of the road without a spare and have triple a, they will tow your car up to 100 miles for free.

Sorry for stealing your glory strech... I'm not looking to go that far with the idea though so theoretically yours is still original. ha. I figure it'd just look somewhat decent, save a few pounds, and i wouldnt have to worry about the rotting car flesh back there anymore.

A waste of space? Back seats in a supra are my idea of wasted space.

I'll be looking to do it in a few months with some other body work. So i'll keep the thread updated.

I come from a land down under
I removed the spare well when I did my fuel tank install and it you're going for a flat floor make sure it has a brace diagonally across it or a bead rolled into it as it will drum like a bitch at speed. (past experience)

I am cutting out the whole section and welding in a round piece of sheet metal that is flat instead of convex like how it is originally. That way it can be a nice little storage spot, for say a tool box or an amplifier.

Damn good thing you mentioned that, i didn't even think about that. I was thinking of flattening out the bottom part of the well and making an amp rack there or something. Speaker enclosure is possible but I feel that it would probably rattle like crazy.
