so my spare tire well is rusted through... i am going to line the trunk with sound and heat deadening material as soon as it arrives in the gift truck lol i really don't have access to a welder so i'm trying to figure out what i should do before put down all the matting. i really want to just cut out the well and put something flat across it but i'm looking for the best ideas and if possible anything that doesn't involve welding

lmao i was thinking just cut it out completely and pop rivet a piece of sheet metal over it and spray it to prevent rust and then stick the sound/heat mat over it... no carpet btw

Its best to fix the rust if you want that sound mat to stay there other wise your going to lose the bottom of your spare tire well. The mat is going to hold more moisture or water against the metal and make it worse. If you want to rig it you could find or make a pan the size of the spare tire well and use good adhesive and maybe rivets to hold it in place lol no welding. Its just going to be hard to fix it without welding a new piece in and depends how much you care about it I guess.

Don't just randomly go about welding the spare tire well area, you'll probably get some flames. Ask me how I know.

I'd probably grind out/cut out the rust, replace with fresh metal, and spray a protective coat.

like i said can't i just eliminate the well all together and cut it out and rivet a piece of sheet metal where it was then spray some paint on it ... i'm going to overlay the whole trunk with the mat anyway. you'll never see it

If that's your plan, then yes, that would work. Better have a triple A card or something though.

And make sure ALL the rust is gone. There's a lot more than just what you see...it'll come back in a different spot if you don't catch it all.

theres a hole in the bottom of the well i'm surprised the tire didn't fall through. i'm just gonna cut it and fill it over and if i decide i might just stick the spare tire in the trunk anyway lol

No, cut it out properly and weld in new metal. That's the only way to do it RIGHT.

Keep this in mind: The spare tire well helps hold your gas tank in place. Basically, the tank is wedged in place around the spare tire well by two straps. If you remove the spare tire well, plan on finding a legitimate way to hold your gas tank from flopping around, and ultimately falling out.
