Running rich

It seem that I'm about ten degrees off on my timing and no matter how much I fettle with the timing, i"m always 5 degrees advanced or 10 degrees retarded. so I have opted to stay at 20 degrees which is closer to the stock 10 degrees. this is causing me to run pretty rich. I'm getting ignition in the exhaust every so often after boost, and some times while slowing to a stop it seems to flood and die so I open the throttle to let it breath. my question is I have a lexus afm housing, but no fuel upgrades, would adding the lexus afm instead of the stock afm that is in right now increase the amount of air enough to let it the engine breath better?

I've been doing it the way the haynes manual says to, but its been some time since i have messed with it because I have to drive the car everyday and I have no time.

Putting the Lex AFM on is just a band aid for the real problem. Find some free time, jumper the diagnostic terminals and check the timing with a proper light. Make sure the car is warmed up and keep the A/C off. There are a ton of reasons why your car could be running rich, could be worse could be lean. Check for codes even if there is no CIL. There are also a handful of reasons why it lugs and or dies coming to a stop. check for vac leaks, cracked hoses, check and or clean the IAC, coolant temp sensors, BOV and any boost leaks.

^ This. I suspect an open IDL contact as that would explain both symptoms. It's why you should never try and time one of these engines without first checking what the MIL is doing after jumpering the diag block...

Well I'm a stupid college kid who don't know jack, if any one is in the Indiana area I'd love for someone to come do a ride along with me to diagnose.

I have an obd1 scanner and no codes have shown up after I cleared the ones from the previous owner of the car. he was running open dp and more boost than allowed by the ecu. so I got lean, rich, too much pressure, cps malfunction, and a temp. malformation. the final one is valid because I broke the ecu temp sensor putting the new engine into the car, but it seems to work fine.

Doesnt seem fine to me. Also, five degrees BTDC is closer to ten degrees BTDC then twenty degrees BTDC, and if i were in that situation id stick with 5 untill its sorted out.

Advanced timing will not cause a rich condition, the backfire is most likely a missfire from such advanced timing causing raw fuel to burn in the exhaust.

Second Fix your temperature sender.

Third follow this procedure. http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?S=FI&P=23

Fourth, report findings.

I'm in northern indiana, greater lafayette to be more exact. I plugged the scanner in where it said diagnostics, under the hood by the fuse box.

How have you determined that your broken temp sensor is "working fine". Some temp sensor failures could result in a rich condition.

Would be good to see your Vf reading. Perhaps the scanner also read that when you plugged it in.

So yesterday I went out to an autocross, on the way there I got a 25 and 26 code. I cleared it and participated, on my last run I noticed that my check engine light came on at WOT then went away. When I went back I checked the code and it was a 34. On the way home I gave it some gas and found that I hit 15psi at WOT. I'm thinking that there may have been something gunking up my fuel system and it finally got cleared out so now I'm hitting boost cut. Within the next couple of weeks I'm going to replace the temp sensor and the o2 sensor and monitor my codes. I thought my boost controller was set to a stock level, but I guess not, so I'm going to dial that down.

Because that's not a scanner. The tool can be replaced by a paper clip, and the book by your repair manual and internet (...)
