Is running open downpipe potentially bad? like, does it effect anything in a bad way? Or is it just loud as hell...

you could concievably overheat the floorboard and cause a fire....:aigo:
but you would have to probably run it really rich and on a track for a few laps for that to happen. As far as I know other than being loud there is no drawback.

My car got insanely hot through the shifter hole when I had open downpipe just going up and down the street in front of my house. But I was missing the rubber cover/shift boot.
Just get a muffler shop to put a flange on a piece of pipe that turns it loose just behind the front tire.
Dont run open in the run you can suck water back into your turbo's.... I heard of a 240 SR20 blow from that!!!!:nono:

Anyways I'm running it right now (open turbo actually, I need to bolt it back up) because of how gay my exhaust looked and was. I'm surprised that it isnt THAT much louder than with the full 3" and Megan fartcan. That being said, dont do it for long as it'll piss people off (including yourself eventually) and you'll want an exhaust that sounds GOOD instead of LOUD, which is basically anything; I've yet to hear a 7M running right that DIDNT sound sexy.

you dont boost it right? thats the WORST thing you could probably do to your engine... 1200+ degree exhaust shooting all around the inside of your head... jesus....
i would at the VERY least run a gutted OEM downpipe just to get the exhaust away from everything..

It hasnt left the garage with it like this. I have a Miata DD that I've used for the past 2 years. I still have a 3" DP from my old exhaust. It doesnt see boost as I have a boost leak at the cam cover pipes, so it wont rev over 3k, 3.5k or so when it starts to go positive.
On the way is the biggest Magnaflow they make and a resonator in addition to my DP.
3" in and out, but the case is 24" long by itself. I meant the case size not piping size
