lol...you guys are gonna laugh...but when I did my headgasket...(was still a TOTAL noob) When I heard that you are supposed to use "silicone", of course you think of clear rubbery stuff, right? Well I used clear RTV sealant...I know I wasn't supposed to, but hey, that's just what noobs do, right? It actually has been okay though...go figure.

I forgot the RTV all together.. this was a year ago. No leaks yet :) (however I would NOT recommend this)

It's too early, This thread scared me.. I thought he was trying to use RTV sealant as a head gasket:cry:

I forgot the RTV sealant (I used the regular blue stuff before) on my last head replacement. About a year later I get the mystery oil leak and it just got way worse... puddles being left under the car after awhile. Only way to fix was to remove the head and do it all over... that's when I went 1J.

Worked fine in the previous BHGs I'd fixed tho (different cars).

LOL Satan... I hope that wasn't your intent of going 1JZ, it's an all too common occurance to hear stuff like that...

The Right Stuff, in the cheez-whiz can, is fantastic RTV as well...

^^naw... It was just another excuse to use to get my way ;-)

I justified it by saying... It will take me longer to remove/replace the head, than do a 1JZ swap... how little I knew.

:stickpoke Ughhh...he was just answering your question. Toyota FPIG is Form In Place Gasket...Kinda like RTV, but not a messy imo.

Dude...why so defensive? Toyota FPIG isn't used as a head gasket...you use it on the front of the motor on the front plate to effect an oil seal. You can use RTV there, or even silicone. The head gasket has nothing to do with FPIG.

what the FUCK?

Toyota Form In Place Gasket a.k.a. RTfuckingV.

We know what engine, and WE know that you need a headgasket. It was actually assumed, as it's a given....

Chill out when people answer your questions. Especially when they're right.

Copper brake spray stuff porter? You're better off with the Permatex blue brake spray... you really don't need that with an OEM headgasket though...
It's more beneficial with a MHG to make up for slight superficial variances in the head/block surface. It'll fill in where the metal layers can't go, whereas an OE composite headgasket can go there, and fill in any slight voids.

I think Porter is talking about Copper RTV for the front plate.

I wouldn't use any spray sealer on a NEW MHG...it can destroy the factory coating that does what you're saying. However, on a used MHG, using a spray sealer should be fine.

It's not a spray... let me clarify... last time I did a HG I used the blue gasket maker and OEM gasket, (worked fine) this time im going to try the copper stuff.. The blue stuff says on the back not recomended for headgaskets (im not sure if they mean as the gasket itself or not to be used with a gasket) and the copper stuff does not say that and the copper stuff has real copper in it. Last time I just put the blue stuff on the block this time im gonna put the copper on both sides of the new stock OEM gasket. I have used the blue stuff as THE gasket for many projects (not HG of course) as its made to be used and it works excellent!! I herd the copper stuff works even better, I guess its good to over 700 deg, alot of ppl use it to coat the exhaust headder as a gasket also (it comes in a spray can for that application)

One more tidbit:
I found when using the blue gasket maker for a gasket its a good idea to put the goop on and put together the part your making the gasket for and tighten it FINGER tight only and let it cure for about 10-20 minutes before tightening it fully (you dont have to but I do). I have been using the blue stuff for a year or so, used it on thermostat housing and a few other things NEVER had any sort of leak. I woudlent recommend it for a valve cover gasket because the rubber gaskets work fine and its too hard to dig out when redoing the seal but for the most part anything elce it works fine and surprises me everytime I use it. Most of the time its used AS THE gasket but can even be used to enhance a gasket =)

I come from a land down under
I use the Copper RTV on the Header and Turbo and just about anywhere else I needed RTV!

I used a 3Bond RTV that's formulated for the Pan this time as last time the Toyota "Seal Packing" failed and I had a slight seepage which bugged the crap out of me!
