what clearance should I set my ross pistons that I am going to have to get to?

Also, where is the cheapest place to get a set of .017 over pistons?

Your pistons will come with a sheet of paper which should tell the specific clearances required. I'm sure someone who has the Ross pistons will chime in and tell you anyway, but you really should have the pistons and block both at the machinist at the same time, so that he can check the bore with the pistons infront of him to get the accurate spacing.

I know that a lot of people have gotten slap with ross's recomended clearances. I'm actually looking for answers here from some of the known high hp people like mallorynx, IJ, adjuster, or some of the others here that I may have left out

I am one of those people who went with Ross' recommended clearance and I do believe it is too much. They are much louder then JE. I think that Ross is a few thousandths too much on their clearance specs. The problem is that if you go too small it could expand enough to seize up in the cylinder.

I appologize for the slight highjack, but the ideal clearance for is JE's .004, correct?

It starts at .006" minimum for Ross, but you are supposed to go more for high boost turbocharged or supercharged engines.
Ross has a little bit more clearance for expansion then JE.

I read somewhere here (searched again, but couldn't find) that the ideal clearance for JE's was .004 to .0045 to avoid piston slap. Bottom line, is .004 too little clearance?

Too much is better then too little, but it gets noisy and could have excessive blow-by if too much. You don't want 1/2 the rings hanging out of the ring lands. The higher the boost and piston temperature, the more clearance needed above the minimum.

Ross may use a special blend of aluminum that might expand a little more than your average aluminum matrix metals in other brands.

This may be why they call for a little "bigger" tolerance than the other brands ?!

But thats me speculating. I am not a metalurgist in any way....but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

well, the way it's looking I may be going with wiseco's instead, as I can get them cheaper.....

What would be the best way to go. I see that the wiseco pistons come coated, come with rings, and pins. Ross do not come coated.
