My 87T had a rolling noise as the car moves.. checked the driveshaft center bearing.. it had lots of play in it.. so, I replaced it, replaced the front, and side seals on the differential, filled LSD with new fluid, and LSD modifier liquid. The car still makes the same noise.. I can hear it at lower speeds. the noise changes with vehicle speed regardless of the gear selection. I have Royal purple fluid in my 5-spd tranny. could it be the tranny? or could it be the front wheel bearings? anyone had this happend?

well.. its kinda Humming noise.. like a shaft turning in a bearing.. thats why i thought it was the center bearing.. when i drive, i cant figure out where the noise is coming from.. i mean, from which corner of the car... the sound fills the cabin..

I know humming noises can be wheel bearings as I had a car that did that once. Does it get louder as you turn the steering one way or another? I have a thumping noise in my car right now and cant figure it out Thought it was the tires but I put a different set on and its still there. Its definitely in the front end as its louder as you turn the wheel, and the driver side is louder then the passenger. But its not like the wheel bearing noise I heard in a car I had previously. its a thumping not moaning.

The noise doesnt change per the angle of the front wheels.. tires are yokahomas about 2 years old.. good amount of thread left in them b/c i dont drive the supra much.. (its always on jack stands in the garage).. if the bearings are bad, i should be able to shake the wheel when the car is on jack stands right? Do I need to remove calipers to feel any shaking? or could it be the differential?

One of the best 'tools' you can get is a mechanics stethoscope. With the car wheel off the ground, spin it up as fast as you can (a pair of helping hands are nice) and use the 'ears' to listen for unusal bearing noise. Then check the other side. They should sound about the same.
This tool will be a valuable addition to your collection for future problems. ie: water pump noise, pulleys, etc.
And, a tire (like mine) with an aggressive pattern can make some annoying sounds.

Find a quiet area (at night is good) in an industrial area with lots of square flat buildings. Open your windows and while going about 40mph shut off the engine and coast in neutral (don't lock the steering wheel obviously, and you'll loose power assist). You should be able to determine from where the noise is coming from, because it will reflect off the near by buildings so you can at least tell which corner and side of car is at play.

To really hear the bearings while jacked up, you'll have to pull off the brake calipers, otherwise it doesn't really work.

I tracked the noise down to the differential (LSD). Now the noise is a high pitch whine.. loud till 65mph. Afther 65 mph, the noise level seem to reduce. Also, i hear a faint jerking sound when I tap on the gas pedal while car is running less than 60 mph. what are options? new diff? if so, should i get aftermarket or rebuilt one.. or should I get mine rebuilt ?? thanks..

I'd see about rebuilding your first. You know what you've got there. With a used one, you don't know where its been (or who with). You are NOT going to get a NEW one ($$$$$$$$$$$$$). The carrier bearing went out in mine. Had them and seals replaced for $387 (total) in Florida back in 2001.

If it helps I had a jaguar that had a dieing rear end and it made a whinning sound that increased in pitch as speed increased. kinda reminded me of what you described in your thread. Cost like a billion and a half dollars to fix as I recall. I couldn't tell ya what the supra 3rd member costs to go through but I bet it aint cheap.

this noise is dfntly not bearings... i tried disconnected the drive shaft and tried to turn the differential front flange.. it takes a lot of force to make it turn initially.. it gets earier to turn as I turn faster.. Also, where do I get a differential rebuilt? any machine shop? need to find one in Virginia around washington DC

If "I" had to have it done to mine, I would take it out of the car, then drop it off at a "reputable" racing shop. Those guys do that sort of thing all the time for racers. They'll have the most experience to do it right. If its not done correctly, it won't last 6 months. 20 years ago I rebuilt a crapload of Toyota, Chevy, & Fords. They must be done correct.
