Rod knock

Hey guys I'm new to supra's and I'm really just scared of one thing. I see a lot of people selling parts due to rod knock. Is there anything that will get rid of this problem like installing forged internals. I know about the bhg problems, but that doesn't seem bad. Easly taken care of with mhg and arp studs or bolts. What is it that causes rod knock in these motors. Anything to look out for. I want to keep the 7m because I want to restore this classic supra, but I would still like to be able to do a 13 sec 1/4 mile.

as long as you know what you are doing, and put in good effort and time, you wont come up with this issue, with supporting parts, your good to go.

Remember, its just not a 7m that gets rod knock. Show me a 18 year old turbo chevy 350 that has been beat on, over heated, and run over on oil changes that doens't have a rod knock.

The key is to always change your oil on time (3k miles or less), use quality oil. Check your oil daily.

I have seen alot of rod knock on the turbo engines due to a turbo failing and using all the engine oil.

So a rebuilt motor with forged internals should be a good foundation then. Would it be just as strong as a 1jz or not. Also when I drive me car the first time that I come into boost I get a smell. I would say probably a sweet smell. I watch the oil every day and I don't use that much. I think most of it is from what I'm leaking, which I is probably from the oil cooler lines. I plan on doing a lot of work to the car this winter. Just wondering if this turbo should be rebuilt first. Also I would like to rebuild to a 57 trim. Can anybody show me a good place and maybe a price.

The 3qt Accusump can help to prevent short term oil starvation and it can preoil the engine before startup to keep bearings in good shape. A good oil filter will help to prevent particles from getting into the bearings.

However, if you don't want to spend all that money you can just use a good filter and good oil.

I havn't heard of that. What is the 3 qt Accusump. I have seen where some people add an extra 1qt of oil. Any problems with this thinking.

The Accusump is actually a reservoir of "extra" oil. Liquids flow from higher pressure to lower pressure. So, when the pressure in the engine drops the accusumps higher pressure oil will flow into the engine. This prevents oil starvation under hard cornering. Also, if you lose an oil line somewhere it will give you a little longer before damage occurs. It is not equivalent to dry sump by any means, but it is a safety measure.

If you want to run 1qt over, a lot of people recommend it so it must be fine. When you change your oil just add in the rest of the bottle.
