rod knock...where do i even begin???

i have a knocking/ticking sound once i hit 2500 rpm, and it is farely quiet if im holding a steady speed, but when i accelerate, it becomes louder, is this really a rod knock? if not what could it be. i do have an oil leak, but i keep up on it pretty well. Any help on what it is and how i can fix it is greatly appreciated!!!

Usually rodknock is something you hear on light throttle between 2500-3500rpm, and it sounds like a faint jackhammer during hard acceleration if it's gotten bad enough. if you just put it in neutral, and rev it lightly to 3000, listen to it with the hood open, and if it sounds like a sporadic rattling, it may indeed be the dreaded RK.

I've been investigating. i have my own thread in the ge section... i listened to the oil pan with a stethoscope today and a friend and I didn't really come to a conclusion....

i had a loose exhaust bracket sound like rk,

ive seen a loose a/c or altenator bracket sound the same. 1 bolt missing with 3 others tight too!

drain your oil and look for shavings

Based on my experience if the knock is not in its late stages the small bits of shaven metal tend to stay in the oil pan so checking oil might be misleading. I think it was shawndude from SF that rode around on his bad rod knock for almost a year before it finally went out on him. I think there are fair amounts of threads indicating what to look for in a rod knock situation. Good luck.

ps... if it IS a rod knock, ALWAYS replace atleast the crank, I've personally have had a very bad experience with getting mine rebuilt.

Your in the same boat as I, Dont drive it unless you want to completely blow it up.

Take Kruso's advice and get a remanufactured crank, bearing and plastigauge. Then try to find the source of the RK, and fix that too.

i rode on rk for about 2 years, trying to get i to blow. That means redlining and such... but i had a fire extinguisher, fresh oil, and a new rebuilt engine waiting on my RK one to do.
It never did. Turns out my knock was just a worn rod bearing in number 6, that never spun, and never damaged my crank. I should have just done the red neck rod knock fix
Oh and i am in NO WAY suggesting you do what i did :rofl:

I might have rod knock and I'm still driving. it's not getting any worse....and i actually have a feeling it's my clutch. possibly the throwout bearing but i'm not sure. i'd lean more towards rod knock. lol

hey if i were you drain oil if there shavings mostlikely your gona have to replace rod bearings and shave the crankshaft for quick easy way or rebuild get new rod bearings and crankshaft . GOODLUCK

Yea it's funny how that got brought up..... i thought i had rod knock about a month or two ago. Call up the parts store, get my new bearings. Go to put em in, and the old ones look pretty good for knocking.... DUMB ASS! i put new bearings in and son of a bitch it was hammering away like a dam machine gun. so i pulled the motor, got it home on a stand, try to take the carnk pulley off with my 3/8" rachet..... the bolt wasn't even tight... at all. I consulted with a few guys from work they all agree the crank pulley was my rod knock... mother f*cker now i have a ripped apart 7M in my garage and no money till income taxes..... i hate life

you might change the oil and water pumps while you're in there at least, for a little insurance.

just drain the oil and see.
i drove mine for 20 minutes on rod knock, and when i drained the oil shavings were everywhere.

Then again, when i was driving the car seized for a second and the tires stop spinning at 60, this could have been when the car actually spun the bearing, then broke it

my egr cooler was leaking and it sounded like a rod knock.its actually the reason the guy sold me the car he thought he blew the motor.the egr cooler is on th eback of the head and its a bitch to get to.

just wait till it cools down and put your hand around that area while somebdy starts it up just to see if you got exhaust gases coming out.

naw i didnt feel it...

you need to drain th oil and save all of it...take a look at it.
