Well I got the engine pulled and on the stand, took the pan off to look at the carnage.

I immediately notice a nice size pile of metal shavings laying in the pan, what appeared to be A LOT of a bearing.

I start poppin rod caps off, went through 3 in no particular order, no damage yet. Get to piston #1 - its burned, but not bad at all. Im happy, I can fix this in no time.

Then I get to piston #3. Takes about 5-10 mins of convincing to get the rod cap off. And then I see it. The inside of the rod cap is jacked. Half bearing material still on the cap, def. scarred up. I attempt to take the bearing off, and its not having it. So I manage to BEND the bearing off of the crank, only to see that some of it is stuck to the crank (but, it can still be turned, thats not the bad part). I got the bearing off of the crank, but not off the other side of the connecting rod. The bearing definately spun, overlapped on the other bearing, and proceeded to WELD ITSELF TO THE OTHER BEARING AND CONNECTING ROD. Its totally fucked.

In the end, only #1 and #3 were damaged, the rest were totally fine. Looks like Im gonna have to break the entire engine down, pull the #3 piston and rod, replace the rod, have the crank turned and put all new bearings in.

I'll have some pics of the damage posted up soon, its terrible. Let this be another warning. CHECK YOUR FUCKIN OIL LEVEL.

Thanks for sharing the cause of your problem. How low were you on oil? I have heard of a couple of guys that had rod knock who weren't low on oil,so I am always curious to hear why each case has occured and how rare it is to get a spun bearing without being low on oil.

In case you need connecting rods, I have 5 extra connecting rods, I was thinking of selling them seperately to folks in your position at $15 a piece. If you need two: $25. It seems that you might be set though, but thought I might mention it.

Yea, I was def. low on oil. I have no idea why, but my oil disappeared quickly. I hadnt checked the oil in about 2 weeks, hadnt driven it much. Anyway, I put in 3 quarts and it was still marking low. So yea, DEF LOW. Looks like my oil pan was leakin.

Thanks for the offer, thats pretty cool of you to help out us Supra guys like that. I have another set of rods, so Im cool.

I'm tearing the engine down tomorrow so I'll have some pics. Its BAAAAD.

You will want to resize all the rods, cut the crank .010" or .020" and use ARP rod bolts now, right? Otherwise you may be tearing down that motor again in the very near furure. You probably need a new oil pump too. Sorry about the problems though, its a lot more fun to upgrade an engine then to fix it cause it broke. :icon_sad:

They already have ARP's. From the looks of it, I'll have to have the crank cut a lil and that one jacked rod replaced, the rest should be ok, but Im taking all of em with the crank to the machine shop.Would I need a new oil pump? Why?

Also, does anyone make a magnet kit for our car? Ive heard about em for V8's n shit, Id like to put some in my engine, keep stuff out of the oil.

Well you did have metal shavings circulating through the pump at some point. I know you said you were low on oil, but maybe the pump was on its way out. Also, if you don't resize the rods and you throw new bearings in there, the clearances might be off. The oil pressure was low enough to kill a bearing, who knows how close the other components were to failure. I'm just saying what I would do in your situation.

Well the pump was brand new, ~2500 miles.

Im having all the rods done, crank turned, and all new bearings.

Im cleaning out all the oil passages, as well as the pump. Puttin magnets throughout.

Notice in pic #4, the color diff between the midpart of the rod to the part right below the bearings, got HOT as hell.
