rod knock or valve shimming needed?

Well after searching my butt off and downloading a TSRM i took my 87 na down to the cams and valve lifters. I have had a pretty decent ticking/ knocking sound going on. You can barely hear it at idle. But gets louder with revs. I have already tried pulling each injector clip at a time with no change in noise. After about 7 different people listened to the motor they swore that "rod knock" doesnt sound like what I got. So I took the intake manifold and valve covers off and did the procedure to check the valve clearance. On the number 2 and 6 exhaust side I measured a .015in compared to the .008-.012 range. Could that be enough to make the engine sound almost like a rod knock? Or was the people that told me i couldnt have it wrong?

Valve lash does not sound like rod knock. But then again some people think injector clicking is rod knock.

Try using a stethoscope or a 2-3 foot long section of vaccuum line to listen to various parts of the engine. Wherever it's the loudest is where your problem lies!
