Since I first heard my car knock I have just parkd it and let it sit...

well I let a mechanic hear it and he said its not a bottom end knock X_X... Well I asked him what it could be and he said collapsed valve or lifter messed up... and somone told me rod knock dont start kncoking and hearing it till 2500+ RPM, well this does it at idle, when I first crank it, for a second it knocks LOUD then stops I guess when the oil reaches the head it stops or quitens, then as it warms up it starts getting louder and louder and knocks full force when hot thinning the oil.

and when I drove it to my girlfriends house where we are going to work on it I noticed the temp gauge didnt go up and it was steaming from the back of the head, (ive changed the hose on the back of the head and checked it and no it wasnt leaking)

well I have yet to pull it in the building and rip it apart im just wondering what you guys think it could be?

Whomever told you that is mistaken. Real rodknock, or spun bearing will knock as soon as you start, and often quiet down a bit after the oil circulates. Just as you described.

It could also be the cam journal is scoured, as it doesnt have bearings. Or both, as I have seen that often on Toyotas. The noise was ignored when it started in the cam, but now is too loud.:3d_frown:

may be a bit OT, but lets have at it.

when i tore my spare head down (with 140,000mi) i noticed that the cam journals are a bit scored.
not bad enough to warrant any work, but it made me wonder...

what would happen if they were, indeed, scored horribly?
thanks,
kurt

well my car fires up fine, no sounds, when i drive or rev it up...once it hits 2000-2500rpms, it gets this very rapid paced ticking sound...but once i go past 2500 or so it stops and its the nice n smooth rev. well if i rev it up hard from like 1000 to 5000rpms, it doesn't tick. i am pretty sure it is not ROD knock because there is no sounds at start up...can someone help me out...before i run at the tracks in the spring and blow something:(

Hate to say it, but that sounds EXACTLY like what rod knock does.

Try the bit with pulling the plug wires... pull one, see if it still sounds the same... try the next one, and so on. If any of the wires make the sound go away, it's knock for sure.

well see i heard rod-knock before, and a bunch of guys on here are saying that rod knock occurs when you first start up the car really bad...its not even so much of a knock as it is a ticking sound...i dunno. i'll try the plug wires

You may just need to adjust your shims. I have a ticking like that, and i am positive its not rod knock, so my next guess would be the shims.

i've realized that it only makes the ticking sound in first gear(when i go thru the gear slowly) and 4th gear (i have the AutoTranny)....so, i dunno if that has anything to do with it...and question(might be stupid), but what do you mean by "shims"? and how would i adjust them?
