So heres the deal...after taking the poopra to the track of course on the last run i developed a rod knock. Now it only gets bad after 3k rpms so i think im going to pull the motor and tranny and replace the bearings in it to get me by till i get the other poopra drivable. Now from your guys' experience with the 7mgte will it fix the problem or will it fix it for a week lol. Ive replaced rod bearings before and its not hard just have to make sure you know what you are doing but i have yet to replace any on a 7m so whats your guys' thoughts on this ordeal?

It's going to depend if there is any damage to the crank journals or rod ends.

the other question and more important. What was the cause of the rod knock? ;)

You say you take it to the track. Drag racing or road racing?

If road racing, was the motor ever opened up to drop the oil pickup tube?
Baffles to control oil flow?

how about the oil system, was it replaced for a full flow, temprature based oil cooling system instead of the stock pressure based one?

it was all stock and i was drag racing. I have been modding it to get some hp and i wanted to test it but i never did anything to the internals. pretty much im trying to figure out if it would be smarter to just pull it and rebuild it or to change the bearings so i can drive it for a month or two until i fix the other. on the other hand i am going to rip it out sometime this week and actually take a look at it because after it started knocking i drove it another 20 miles just fine and just sat it at home and havnt touched it since. so hopefully its not to bad off but well see.

Well I'm no expert on this kind of thing, but fwiw I did have this experience:

I ran a 7M for more than 20k miles after the bearings were replaced by the previous owner due to a light RK on the JDM he just put in it. I had plenty of problems with that motor, which is why it's gone now, but knocking wasn't one of them and that was with some bpu's and taking it to just under 260 whp. The previous owner was a certified mechanic, and apparently did a pretty good job on that, at least. :)

Was the motor low on oil or did the knock start even with it full of oil?

Full of oil and RK happening. Not even on the crappy 7m oiling system is that going to happen.

low oil condition is the primary reason RK happens. All it takes is ONE time and from there it is only a matter of time before it dies.

And uncovering the pick-up tube during lateral G will do it, especially if the oil level is below full on the dipstick ;)
