Hey guys,
I just got my 88 Supra Turbo about a week ago and when I bought it, it drove great and I had no problems. I was driving it a few days later and I ended up hearing a knock from 2000 rpms to about 3500 rpms. It is for sure rod knock and it is getting louder. I looked under the car and the oil pan is dented in very badly right where the pickup is so I think it starved of oil. Anyways I don't have very much money, but do you guys think it would be cheaper to rebuild my stock motor or just end up buying a JDM motor. I am a mechanic so I can rebuild the motor no problem, but with the cost of machining and new parts I think it will cost more than double the price of a JDM motor. I know the JDM motors are scetchy but they do have a two month warrenty. what do you guys think that I should do???

mods: sp58gt turbo, apex afc, mk4 supra fuel pump, IC piping, 3" turbo back

yah, but for the rebuild, I am going to need at the least new gaskets, water pump, oil pump, rings, bearings, hardware, timing belt @ acc., machine work. That is not counting the cost that if I have to grind my crankshaft 10/10 which most likely I will have to. If I include forged pistons and rods than I would be spending way to much cash. a JDM motor will be a lot cheaper and will have a warrenty for a few months so I'll know for sure if it has rod knock or a BHG than I will send it back. Seems like a JDM motor is the way to go.

I would go 1jz, but I already have a bitchin turbo for the 7mgte. The car pulled extremely hard before it crapped out.

You will be much better off with a rebuild rather then getting a JDM that you dont know the history of or how hard it was driven. The 7M is an amazing motor if kept properly and treated nicely. However I do love my new 1jz... :D

yah, I think that you guys are right. I have talked to a few people and done some research and you guys are definately right. Rebuilding my motor is definately the way to go. I is going to be more expensive, but I will have a fresh motor and won't have to worry about anything. thanks for all of your advise.:icon_bigg

I've got the same symptoms, but I'm going 1JayZ................lol

Did you have the knock while you were at the meet?

I've got almost the exact same symptoms with my car, but the knock isn't really getting louder. I also only drive it maybe a few miles a week though...
