Does it matter where a resonator is placed in the exhaust? I want to place my as close to the downpipe as possible, but I want it to work properly, too.

It will make a difference to the tunning of the resonator. That is if it is a real resonator not just a muffler. A muffler has baffles or fibrous stuff inside, a resonator is an empty chamber with a given volume and orifice size tuned to the frequency you're trying to suppress.
But only way to find out is to put it on and try it and see if you like it. Too many variable to calculate it out.
