Just got a new head and I got some Valve stem seals I need to replace. Do I need to use a spring compressor or is there an easier way to do it. I Dont have one and if I need one, where could I get one

yes you need a valve spring compressor. you can rent them at kragen for like 30$ deposit and you'll get your money back when you return it. make sure to get a import one and not the domestic.

I bought one on ebay that works well on the 7M. It doesn't seem to be sold anymore though, but had a deep throat needed to get access to the keepers inside the bucket bore.

You already have a tool, but for future reference, I have a snap-on tool that I love (one of the very few). It's an on-car valve spring compressor that only works on OHC vehicles, and really well for 90% of Toyota vehicles and it can be used off-car as well. This one is similar to the one that I use:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?item_ID=80816&group_ID=1575

You also need a way to put high pressure air into the cylinder to hole the valve up, and I use a compression tester with the schrader valve pulled. Kinda spendy, but it makes the job so much easier. Plus you can change seals and springs in-car, like we did with Dan's (leecheater) 2JZ when we put BC springs and retainers in for the 272's he bought.

Here's the post where we were using it:

Yea I burned a valve and pulled the head off but didn't have courage to rebuild it myself...funny because now 2 years later I am building a gte....oh how things change.

Yeah, this is a universal application tool, but I've found that it works great with Toyota's small valves from the little 1.3L 4E to the 5.7L 3UR and everything in between.
It's no cake walk to do this on-car but do-able on your own. If you noticed, I had help from Dan's nephew Sean (funky_monkey58) for doing it on-car for Dan's 2JZ, but when the head is off the car I can do it by myself no problem.

but its only for on car right? the reg off car valve spring compressors do work unless you have an adapter because the springs are sunk in the head.

theres a thread on here from Jseaman that tells you how to make a cheap one for like $10. I recently replaced my seals and am in the process of adjusting valve clearances. Its just two pcv tubes. one has a notch cut into it so you can see the retainer keepers and install and remove... search.

Edit: Ok, scratch that, valve clearance adjustments was Jseaman. Heres the link to the stem seal article.

ps: have fun getting the old seals off. I had two drop into the oil pan through the head. Expect to see those later when fixing my rod knock.

Changed my valve stem seals on the car yesterday using the snap-on tool mentioned above. I don't think I've ever used a tool that worked so well. The only semi-difficult part of the job was removing the old stem seals, as they took some prying and jimmying with some bent-nose snap ring pliers to come off. Filled the cylinder with rope to prevent the valves from dropping - worked fairly well, but had to grab two valves with vise-grips and re-position the rope once...that got a bit hairy as dropping a valve meant a 4 hour job turned into 20 hours.

All thats left is to get some new shims and startups will no longer be accompanied by a puff of smoke.
