Replacing Exhaust Manifold

Evening all,

I have read several sections of the TSRM, and usually swear by it, however, I have to replace my exhaust manifold and remembering the last go-round it puts the hair up on the back of my neck.

The last time when I did my HG, we put the exhaust manifold on, then tried to put the oil pipe on the turbo, then tried to seat the turbo on the maifold while seating the oil pipe on the block. ROYAL PITA we couldn't get the oil pipe on the block. We then took the turbo back out, and attached the oil pipe to the block. We then set the turbo onto the manifold, and the oil pipe. I'll have to say, this way was a little easier, but by no means easy. the oil pipe is a SOB to get connected at either side, and it was a PITA to get the turbo onto the manifold as well with oil pipe already connected to the block.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the simplest way to do this. I am going to do this job tomorrow.

There is no easy way to do this job. I like to have the line attached to the turbo when installing and then guide it on the block while seating it on the manifold, but its all about what works for you.

Yeah, there's only one way to do it right, and I think it's how clifftrail explained it. You've got to get it on the manifold and block at the same time.
I removed it once, and when I went to replace it, I got it seated on there fine, and decided that it was way too stupid a design and bought JBL's stainless braided oil feed/drain line. They're so much better to work with!

I did it yesterday. It as acutally easier to remove the mainfold and turbo together. The two bolts for the oil line are the biggest pain either way you do it. I think that it was a poor design, but it works. I got it all back together, set the timing, tightened some loose hoses, and presto the magic happened.

Now that I have all of the maintenance and repairs done, where to next? I already have the exhaust system in place DP and CatBack, I still need intake, MBC, Suspension, and....

ive pulled the stock turbo a few times along with my sp61gt and a new jt61gt. SS lines make a world of difference over the stockers, especially if you werent careful when you were taking them off and bent them at all. i think the manifold removal is over kill. i have gotten it down to where i can remove/install/cleanup in uner and hour and a half now. practice makes perfect!

Ifound it a little easier to put on the top 2 manifold bolts to keep the turbo from sliding off and the from under the car you can lift the return pipe enough to get it on the block..

FYI.. when you put those oil lines back on the turbo make sure to torque to specs if you use the stock metal gasket.. Too tight and I left a few oil streaks in the garage..
