Removing Rear Knock Sensor in 5 Minutes

After reading on how much of a pain in the ass the rear knock sensor was to remove I dreaded doing it

The way I did it requires removing nothing but the actual knock sensor, not the starter and not the intake.

First thing you need is to get the car off the ground so you can get under it

Then get a combination wrench that can go to 27mm, a 27mm wrench is too long, but the combination wrench should be about the right length, I used a KOBALT one

Now put a strong wire through the hole on the other end of the combination wrench and make sure this is long enough to hang down to the ground from the top of the car

squeeze your arm through everything and get the combination wrench onto the knock sensor.

Pull straight down on the wire

BINGO

only problem is when putting the new one on you cannot torque to factory specs, but I did it hand tight and it works great

You don't actually have to pull the starter, simply loosen it by using a combination of extensions/ratchet up to the front of the car. Unplug the battery while doing it, though.

thats why this technique is great... no touching the starter at all

I know, but I was implying that loosening the starter is easy, and can be done in just a few minutes. :)

Props to you for ingenuity. :)

You can tighten with the combination wrench... It can be TIGHT, but you cannot set it to the proper torque with a torque wrench, just estimate, as I do most of the time anyways

Ohhhh thats cool haha, if it's not a cylinder head it don't need to be torqued;)

Of course thats an exageration.

I like it. Thanks Tom!

I think people read too deep into torque specs. Tight is good for me unless it's a vital part.

Too tight on the knock sensor(s) and you could get timing retard. ;) Same with too loose.

Not hard to do the math to get the right torque...

If the wrench is a foot long, you put the required amount of weight on it...
