if you remove the screen, the AFM will no longer work.... That straightens the airflow for the vortex to be set up correctly that the AFM reads.

Ok, i'll leave them. In the GM area... you pull that crap out for more Air flow. My '89 Vette's MAF made a huge difference. Actually flowed few hundred more CFM w/out the screens. 450CFM stock 650CFM w/out screens. But ok, i'll leave'm. thanks guys. I'm really liking this site!

Mafts are different than AFM

MAFT have that screen to prevent something to come in and rip the hot wire out,

in the AFM it actually serves to straight the air flow out prior to it being split by the plastic triangle which causes the turbulance which causes the led to read the flutter. :)

Great info, i thought those honeycombs (in mafs) were there to straighten out the air like in the stock AFM. Thanks for clearing this up.

I see the importance of leaving the AFM mesh, but about 2 years ago I removed it and the car ran perfect without it. I just recently swaped in a 1jz though, so it doesn't matter anymore:)

I've heard of it working fine for some people, but I've also heard of quite a few problems it's caused as well. Might as well keep it, it's not restricting anything really, it's not like it's a tight mesh, it's a semi-wide open honeycomb structure.

Sometimes they are ok. Maybe the screened K&N helps it a bit. You can get a resonably accurate hot wire reading with out it though.
