i didn't remove mine but the pump froze and it took me a year to find another pump. you can tell a little gain but the front of our cars are heavy and the power steering really helps. i just got a new pump about a week ago. when i took it for a drive i almost put the car in the ditch b/c i was so use to having to muscle the wheel to make the car turn i wouldn't take it off the gain is so little that i would rather be able to turn it.

p.s. this was on my 87 n/a hardtop. turbo is still waiting on the damn pistons. 7 weeks and counting

I myself had two power steering lines rust straight through one day while I was driving down my street after having spent a month assembling my fuel system. After losing power steering while driving I can definitely say that any hp gain would not be worth the loss of control. Plus, it took me, my dad and my 90 psi air hammer 2 days to knock those rusted out pipes off the car and replace them, so I don't really feel like entertaining the notion that I could have avoided all that labor.

I eliminated my ps a few months into owning my supe (early 2002). It was developing the usual leak, I was a major newb, and I didn't feel like dealing with it. I bridged the input and output lines on the rack (involved some hacking) and it works great. The rack is still wet (still has fluid in it) so it's heavier feeling than a true manual rack but I'm so used to it I dislike power steering. If you are wanting to do this to 'gain power' I'd say don't bother. The gain is miniscule and unnoticeable.
